Fleer set identification help
I have this Fleer sticker set of 60 and think it was offered in the pictured wrapper. It is not discussed on the Fleer Sticker Blog. Does anyone know the year of issue or anything else about it ? The stickers have a peel off blank back. Fronts are numbered 1 to 60. The year in the wrapper scan is just my guess

Al, I first read your question without seeing who asked it. I said to myself, "I bet Al will be able to answer that one." A few hours later I came back by this thread and realized you asked the question. This has completely rocked my world view!

Hey Al,
I have no real proof I can locate but I have heard 1969 as a print date on those. There are also basketball as well that match that design I have heard also referenced as 69. |
Al:
I may have stumbled on this in the Baseball Card Almanac (at a local card store). It appeared under 1960 Fleer Stickers. Please see if these match. Jerry |
Justin-- thanks for scan and info
Jerry-- I do not have the Almanac, what does it say about them ? There were other well known team logo decals in 1960. Robert- thanks for the vote of misplaced confidence ;) I think it was issued in the 60s and we have narrowed it to between 1960 and 1969 :-) |

There's a 1960 Fleer sticker set on p 332 of the newest Almanac and the example card looks like it's similar to yours in design but it lists as a 20 sticker set. Do any of yours have a set of names at the bottom (to go in the boxes shown on the stickers)? The other thing I would note about the Almanac listing is that it says the cards are "checklisted below in alphabetical order" but there is in fact no checklist given....

Mine have the stickers. Are these two separate issues?

Fleer Stickers
No. It is one set. Mine are numbered 1 to 60 and 41 to 60, the All Star cards, have those names at the bottom

I don't own an Almanac, but will try to get a pic from the card shop copy, showing what I saw.

I own the almanac and went to the listing for 1960 fleer stickers on page 332. These are not the same ones. It's a 20 sticker set and reads as follows:
"This 20-sticker set measures the standard size. The fronts feature a cartoon depicting the title of the card. The pictures are framed with red and black stars and the words 'all star' printed in blue. First names are printed below that and are used to place in the blank box of each sticker to represent the person the sticker depicts. The stickers are unnumbered...." |
Maybe the 20 sticker set was issued separately first and then incorporated into the 60 sticker set later, or the other way around. Many Fleer sets were issued over several years with minor changes and are easy to find. This set, or sets, seems pretty scarce. Maybe because it is pretty dumb and no one cared. The really weird Weird Oh set is easier to find

Benjamin's Sport Americana Guide has both the Baseball and Basketball sets listed but with no years shown. Checklists are incomplete to say the least.

I'm curious as to why a set like this would even be listed in any card almanac. There are no actual players named or depicted. Other than the fact that it's a baseball theme, what's the relevance? Should they list every single item that has a baseball motif?
|
Mark- I do not diagree on issue of listings , and my initial question was just looking for any info since the set is not on the Fleer Sticker Blog. But if you look at the Fleer listings in the SCD Standard Catalog, the majority of Fleer listings are not player specific. Also there are Topps listings for non player issues, such as the 1974 Action Emblems.
