Mantle Auto- SGC Deemed Fake?
1 Attachment(s)
Hello all. I just got this card back and SGC believes it is not authentic. I'm totally at a loss on this one because it came from a good friend who is also a very reputable dealer and I don't see any of the dead giveaways, at least those I am aware of, that are often found with fake Mantle autos. He'll refund my money on this one so I'm not upset but I just don't see how this is not authentic. What are your guys thoughts?

Here's the same card, with a very similar autograph I think, in a PSA slab.

your card is not an awful forgery, but is highly suspect and personally, I would avoid it had it been for sale. While an open a is not completely out of the ordinary, this one is not open in the area I would suspect or have ever seen.
The moon M's are not awful terrible, but the interaction with the Ma, is horrible and atypical. The tle also does not have the slant that I would like either. Again, maybe authentic, but imho, it is 'likely not genuine" for those reasons and other subtleties I don't wish to go into. While it's about a 3- 4 on my 10 point scale, it's certainly not a 9 or 10, which are strong buys. It's not a zero like many easy to spot forgeries if that helps you understand why it did not pass. The slabbed one is a beautiful example and I'm sorry but other than the card being the same, it doesn't look much like yours. |
I think SGC made the right call. Not your garden variety mass-produced junk, but several atypical traits as Fudd noted. The overall stretched out look is a major red flag.
I will note that the grainy image is not clear enough to assess speed and flow. In hand there may be signs of slowness that is not evident in the photo presented. |
Also no slant or space on the tle
