Could sure use some expert opinions on Ott Ball & Mantle.
Hey all.
Just wanted a few opinions on 2 items. First is a cool looking Mantle Poster Signed. Just want to know if it's real and approximate retail value on it. The second item is what I believe is a 1939 Giants Team ball. Hard to make out some of these names but Notables that I see are Ott and McCarthy. Just want to know if it's real and approximate retail value on it as well. I have a chance to pick these up for either trade or sale. Thanks in advance for your time guys. As always, you rock and so does this forum. https://sportscardalbum.com/c/2q87mjin.JPG https://sportscardalbum.com/c/376z1z77.JPG https://sportscardalbum.com/c/02192ikn.JPG https://sportscardalbum.com/c/z553zkl4.JPG https://sportscardalbum.com/c/bn94h0g7.JPG https://sportscardalbum.com/c/6xn0oda3.JPG https://sportscardalbum.com/c/b03jpzia.JPG https://sportscardalbum.com/c/df0at50n.JPG https://sportscardalbum.com/c/wcm6e47q.JPG https://sportscardalbum.com/c/46c5846m.JPG |
That's Jack, or Johnny, McCarthy...not Joe.
The Mantle...is it approx 7 inches long and maybe 4 inches high? If so it is part of a set of such "cards" issued by Davco in 1982. I have several of them that are signed, including DiMaggio. The Mantle does look good to me, and I would guess a value of $150 or so...give or take $25. The 1939 Giants ball is in rough shape obviously. Ott is the only big "star" on the ball...Tony Lazzeri was on that team for a time in 1939 but I do not see him on your ball. There may be a couple early deaths in there, but they likely wouldnt change matters much unless they were super rare. My guess on value, in that condition, would be around $150 as well. Tom C |

I didn't notice the hand holding it up there in the corner. If it was 4x7...those would be some seriously small hands!!
Tough to say if it is a period advertising piece or just a blow up of the Davco card itself. As an advertising piece it could be closer to $200. If it's just a poster I would stick to my original figure of around $150. Tom C |
Right above the Jack McCarthy is Paul Dean, who was with the Giants in 1940-1941.

It might be important to know, if it is a blow up of the Davco card, could it also be a blow up of the Mantle sig as well?
Based on the thumb size, that sig looks quite large. |

also, does the Ott look good? Thanks

To me the Mantle looks good, but there are quite a few others on this board I would listen to about Mantle before me.
I am a big fan of both M's having the little loop at the bottom. Tom C |

My useless opinion is that Ott looks shaky, I'd suspect clubhouse, but there are many better voices than mine.

Just looked at prior sales of generic Mel Ott team balls from late 30's -early 40's. The sale prices on similar condition balls are in the $250-300 range through auction houses. Minus buyers and sellers premiums and you are looking at $200 or so. You may get a bit more on your own, but I would advise against an eBay Auction. BIN if you must. Not a lot of people looking for a 1940 or 1941 Giants ball. Could go way too low through eBay auction.

Please don't be so impatient. |

I was not being impatient I was simply joking around with him because he said his opinion wasn't as solid as others on here when it came to the mantles. I just implied no one else is chiming in so he was the best I had all in fun. |
