Topps 1954 Scoops
The most recent SCD has an article by Doug Koztowski on the 1954 Topps Scoop set. I have only collected the baseball subset of 4. Also have an unopened pack and two Fellers, one clean and one with the black slats . Anyone else collect the set ?

A fan of the set and have it complete (156 cards). One of the better early Topps sets. Notable world events since the beginning of time including sports. Quite affordable and looks great in 9 pocket pages.

Do all the cards come with and without slats, or do only some come with slats. Do the cards that come with slats all have clean counterparts ? Did cards with slats come with both clean black slats and slats with words on them, or just one or the other ? Do cards with slats carry a premium over clean cards ? Can cards with slats grade higher than clean cards ? How high can a scratched card grade ?
Did the slatted cards come in both single card and five card packs ? Did the slatted cards with writing only come in one or the other type packs ? Over how many years was this set issued ? |

My subset. Is that John Travolta's father in one of the cards ?

Al.....now you have to have the unscratched Feller with printing............

Slats
Tom-- that is one of the questions I raised above. Does any particular card, or every card, in the set exist clean and with both plain black and black with words slats ? I do not know and article did not say.

I am seven cards away from the set, and have just one card with some of the "scratch-off" material left. I do have several cards with creases:D

I bought a full set years ago and have upgraded a little since. I love it, there is some great artwork in it and the newspapers and headlines are quite well done.
I'm not sure all cards can be found with all black and sloganized black bars. The story I have heard is the slogans only came in five cent packs as the top card but I don't think that's correct. I think a number of cards also were produced with no black bars at all as some of mine seem way too clean to have been scratched off. And yet others always seem to have a light black like or two remain behind. One of the last small sized sets made by Topps back in their golden era; I've always wondered why the cards weren't larger. |
