Dream Team

Who is your dream team?
Not necessarily who are the greatest players, but the personalities or playing styles that you would enjoy watching and playing for your team. They could be great, they could be Marv Throneberry. Doesn't matter.

I heard an interview from the Red Barber show in 1947 with Connie Mack giving his all time team and interestingly enough he picked George Sisler for
1B. Over Lou Gehrig. That really surprised me.

mechanicalman 08-16-2016 09:43 AM

Cool question.

I've never seen any of these guys play, but if I could build a field in Iowa, and these dudes would show up, I'd be in heaven.

My favorites to watch (and they weren't bad, either)

Utilizing Andrew Jerome's format (and a few of his choices), here are mine with a bit of Boston and Seattle bias:

C: Ivan Rodriguez
1b: David Segui
2b: Pete Rose
SS: Omar Vizquel / Ozzie Smith
3b: Frank Malzone
LF: Carl Yastrzemski
CF: Ken Griffey, Jr.
RF: Ichiro Suzuki
DH: Edgar Martinez

SP: Earl Wilson (who was nearly as good a slugger as pitcher)
SP: Hishashi Iwakuma
SP: Jamie Moyer
SP: Bill Monbouquette
SP: Don Schwall (whose rookie season got me following baseball in the daily papers)

RP: Dick Radatz (the Original "Monster")
RP: Edwin Diaz (this kid is filthy, according to Andrew Jerome but, really, his fastball is clean as a whistle)

cool-vintage 08-17-2016 09:00 PM

Just a quick list (Maybe I'll add another team)

C: Mike Piazza
1b: Jake Beckley

Okay, this is a fun idea.

C Josh Gibson
1B Keith Hernandez
2B Jackie Robinson
3B Brooks Robinson
SS Ozzie Smith
OF Eric Davis
OF Bo Jackson
OF Tris Speaker

SP Kerry Wood
SP Nolan Ryan
SP Jamie Moyer
SP Mark Fidrych

RP Jeff Innis
RP Pat Venditte
RP Brooks Kieschnick
RP Micah Owings

I like great defensive plays, amazing feats of athletics (looking at you Bo), and pitchers who can hit (or throw submarine, or pitch with both hands).

Tris Speaker I picked just because I want to see if he lives up to his defensive reputation. We know so much more about the players now that it's hard to put someone really old on an all-time-fun team. Their particular style of playing is lost, besides a handful of anecdotes.

EvilKing00 08-18-2016 06:18 AM

2B hornsby

I am surprised nobody nominated the "Shoeless" one. Jackson must have been fun to watch, if only for his raw talent on the diamond.
