REWARD if you can find a photo match for me!
2 Attachment(s)
I posted yesterday about going to the Antiques Roadshow and getting this bunting appraised at $1500-2500. The appraiser really liked it but said if I could find a BETTER photo match, it would be great. The photo I have came from a net54 member who found it on Getty Images. This was from the Grand Opening Opening Day of Candlestick Park, April 12, 1960. It appears the buntings alternate between red, white and blue and the Giants orange, white and black. I know some of you have great detective skills :p . If anyone can find a clearer image, I'll reward you with, let's say, $10 Paypal. I know it's not much, but what the hey?

Two more things, Butch:
I can't access the ww4.hdnux.com site. Can you confirm the guy in the photo? I'm thinking maybe it's SF Mayor George Christopher. Secondly, do you remember the search phrase you used on the sfgiantsphotos site? I had been to that site and found a few Opening Day photos but not the one you found of Mays. Thanks again!!!! This is the thing I love most about net54 and its members, |

Heck, now that Butch has me one the right track, I've found another. This is Mayor Christopher, with Nixon to his right. Case closed!

G-I-A-N-T-S appears to be BACKWARDS in the shown photo, but...not nitpicking - great pickup, and provenance - congrats![/B] |

I love figuring things out, so after watching those youtube videos and finding a schematic of 1960 Candlestick, I've figured there were no more than 48 total buntings that day. 24 red, white and blue and 24 Giants. |
Hi Rob, we're glad to have been of some help! We'd thought that maybe black-&-white photos or partial views
wouldn't fill the bill. We actually didn't even search specific sites -- just entered [ "opening day" +"candlestick park" +1960" ] in a Bing image search and video search. Oh, everyone's coat seems to buttoned on the correct side in that photo, so it would seem that one of the banners (a crucial and prominent one, no less) did get hung wrong-side-out... No PayPal necessary! We're all here (or should be) to help one another, eh? We did just get some bolt-from-the-blue horrific medical news here, though, so we'd appreciate any good vibes sent our way... |

Interesting that this version is of a batter as opposed to a pitcher. Wonder if any of these have survived?

That is an absolutely incredible piece of history. Where on earth did you find it?

Here's what they look like when hung with the back facing out. I could see how it could happen. |

< "Do the brackets and plus signs make a difference when searching? i.e. is [ opening day + candlestick park + 1960 ]
any different than searching opening day candlestick park 1960?" > Brackets included in our post only to set the search terms apart from the rest of our note -- brackets not entered in Bing search box. Yeah, plus signs (no space between plus sign and following word or phrase) do seem to help eliminate irrelevant results. < "You are The Man, Butch!!" > Thanks, three of us actually, although could very well be down to two any day now... |
