1952 and 1953 Topps Baseball wrapper values?
 

A friend picked-up two 1952 and 16 1953 Topps Baseball wrappers today at a yard sale. Not a lot of eBay data on these. Can someone give me a round about of what each year sells for? They have some minor tears along the edges and a few have the gum still in the packs. The cards were sold about an hour before he got to these.

He doesn't want to sell them, just looking at what the going rates are on them.

I cant help on value but I had a follow up question.

Did the person that bought the cards open the packs?

I asked him that and he didn't think to ask.

A 1952 wrapper in rough shape will sell for $75 - $100. If no tears, close to $200.

What a find for the buyer, but it's obvious he/she didn't know a lot about baseball cards or they would have taken the wrappers as well, or the whole lot if they were still in their packs.

Regardless, still a nice pick up for your friend.

I have had both. Actually the '53 is a little harder to find than the '52. What an awesome yard sale find!!!

It's been awhile, but I remember selling the 1952 wrapper for around $150 and the 1953 wrapper for around $500. It's been awhile though. Not sure if these have gone up or down.

My wife and I garage-saled all morning. The best I could come up with was a few beat up 1985 Topps.

Yes, in Wisconsin, garage-saled is a real word. :)

Yeah, what he said! Where were these found? I can't imagine finding 52 and 53 Topps at a yard sale!

Are the wrappers one cent wrappers or five cent ones (no pun intended!)

Best yard sale find was last year. Lady had (10) 1920s-1930s Yankees ticket stubs and a Hartland Rocky Colavito in nice condition. Best $20 I've spent.

That is pretty good as well. The best I found was some beater 1955 Bowman commons. The guy wanted $10 each for them. I walked away shaking my head.

I'd personally have taken both the cards AND the wrappers - methinks the wrappers are more difficult to find - Note: perhaps the first buyer scored some high-octane cards, but it's inexcusable to leave these wrappers behind provided they, too, were ripe for the pickin' along with the cards.

That makes me think that whoever found the cards wasn't a "seasoned" collector. Imagine the local guys at your local auction house paying big money for a wax box of 1997 Topps. I'm betting it was someone like that who found them. It was someone who realized the old cards were worth a whole lot more money that the yard sale operator was asking for them, yet not savvy enough to pick up those old "worthless" wrappers.

The 1953's are really tough. I would like a 1953 if your friend decides to sell. You can PM me by my address. I've been watching ebay and have seen only 1-2 of the 1953 wrappers out there. I think the $400-$500 range is a good point for decent 1953's.....I missed one that sold at the recent national for $325.
