BB card Lithography doesn't get much better than these 1888 GOODWIN CHAMPIONS.
The other 38 cards in this set will follow. http://i603.photobucket.com/albums/t...162gaudaur.jpghttp://i603.photobucket.com/albums/t...tarsN162bb.jpg http://i603.photobucket.com/albums/t...dgecigpack.jpg TED Z . |
Joe G (hi Joe) posted this just now in the new pick ups thread but it fits here nicely too. So I took the liberty of copying it here. Great Cabinet, Joe!!LL
A cabinet from the family of Pretzel Getzien, won from recent LOTG auction (thank you Al). In rough condition for sure (trimmed copy on left), but love the collectables with direct connection to the players themselves. The consignor explained that Pretzel Getzien was her great, great grandfather. There is a small "X" at top, left of center, by the portrait of Getzien. The consignor furthermore shared family stories such as “I rempember my Grandma telling me that his wife made all his shirts because he was so muscular he couldn’t fit in store-bought clothes! But he was embarrassed that it made him look cheap, so he wouldn’t let her tell anyone! Evidently she was a wonderful seamstress but must have told!” Getzien's success mirrored the Detroit Wolverines with his two best seasons in 1886 (30-11) and 1887 (29-13). He led the pitching staff in 1887 and would continue into post-season with a 4-2 record against the St. Louis Browns. The second copy of the cabinet (on right) was obtained years ago and once belonged to Deacon White. I suspect all the players were given copies of this cabinet after winning the Championship in 1887. I was also able to pick up an N300 of Brouthers with decent eye appeal despite the pin hole (again from LOTG). |

Great piece, Joe. I, too, love stuff connected to the player.

We're here. We just tend to be shy, retiring types! :D Glad to have gotten this cabinet from Scott Brockelman. The N172 I have of Joe Miller does not have his face visible and that is a pet peeve of mine. Since it's not likely I'll find a better Old Judge pose of him, this was a great alternative. Kevin |
YAY tintypes! I's shown them before, but not recently. Fun little bunch.

Could not possibly agree more with this statement. These cards are beautiful. |

I don't consider myself primarily a 19th-century guy, but I love the era and have a modest collection of baseball stuff from it (~70 Old Judges, miscellaneous other baseball cards and items), plus a ton of nonsport N tobacco cards and maybe 5000 trade cards. Sorry for the imperfect scan on this, but I had to scan it in two parts and couldn't get them to line up quite right.

Circa 1888-1889......I would venture to say that the artwork and the quality of the lithography of these subjects have not been matched in 127 years.

I agree Gary, the 19th to 20th century post ratio is maybe 1:100. If only there was more 19th century material available I suspect there would be more collectors and posts.
Thanks Leon for copying my earlier post over. Love the Pitt OJ collection Jason, nice looking group. I'm sure you've compared notes with John D. Nice Miller cabinet in lieu of a good pose OJ Kevin. Love all the posts from Ted et al. Joe M!, good to see you posting as well. Would love to see any of your collection make an appearance. Here is an 1886 Tomlinson Imperial Cabinet. |

I recently got out, and dusted off, my old 1895 scorebook that contains three games of the Negro Cuban Giants team (including Frank Grant).
The scorebook was the team scorebook for the Hagerstown independent minor league team. It seems the Giants played several games against the Cumberland Valley League teams which included teams such as Hagerstown, Chambersburg, Hanover and a few others. The reason I pulled this scorebook out was that I recently saw a broadside in the last Hunt auction that was for a c. 1895 game between Chambersburg and the Cuban Giants (see bottom below). Would of tied the two together but the auction price prevented that from actually happening (it went for $8,500  ). Rob M Attachment 238653 Attachment 238675 Attachment 238666 |

Great Hines and Glasscock cards! I used to have a Troy Haymaker Stereoview card but sold it years ago. It wouldn't be a 19th thread unless we show a baseball currency. This one is the back from the scarce 1893 Series which has all All Stars on it.
