What will be the major "find" at the Atlantic City National

The last time the National was held in Atlantic City, a "fresh" T206 Honus Wagner walked into the show. Well, the Wagner didn't actually walk into the room, but was walked in by the owner, but you get the point.

Given some of the recent prewar finds, I think it would be pretty cool to hear what expectations or predictions ya'll want to make with respect to what card/set/collection will be the talk of Atlantic City this year?

Perhaps a Baltimore News Babe Ruth shows up? A complete 1914 Cracker Jack Set? Maybe a T210 Joe Jackson? Or, will the show be a bust without much "new" material coming in from the public?

There's no right or wrong answer, but it would be interesting to hear everyone's take.

Think there has been a "bust" or two at each of the last couple of Nationals. Probably a different thread topic though.

Bedbugs !!!

begsu1013 06-20-2016 12:17 PM

a chalkout line from a guy who had already emptied his bank account the previous night, woke up, sold all his cards then lost again on the tables.

the autopsy will reveal he had several things in his system including hep-c which was just contracted the night before.

and bedbugs.

Exhibitman 06-20-2016 12:25 PM

Large crowds of collectors...

Thromdog 06-20-2016 01:05 PM

Investors. Or something.

Peter_Spaeth 06-20-2016 01:11 PM

Conspiracy theorists.

Snapolit1 06-20-2016 01:18 PM

Chicago had more murders Father's Day weekend than AC will probably have in the next 3 years. Someone tell me again how dangerous Atlantic City is.

PM770 06-20-2016 02:32 PM

Jimmy Hoffa?

autograf 06-20-2016 02:39 PM

Only because it's the most confusing day of the year!

What about card-jacking? ;)

J/K, Steve. Save your breath. You'll never convince those who have already convinced themselves. :)

The Chicago one is not in Chicago, but a suburb of Chicago, Rosemont, which I'm sure has less murders in 50 years then Atlantic City has in 3 years.

c'mon, a tractor trailer has to be worth more than that, even with having to dispose of all that '88 Donruss...

mechanicalman 06-20-2016 07:03 PM

With current price trends, it seems like anyone walking in with a shoebox of '55 Topps has the potential to make some waves.

Rookiemonster 06-20-2016 07:03 PM

Hey 1988 donruss has some short prints lol in the high numbers.

Only 2 million of each.

Lol, but yeah, it is kind of expensive to get rid of all that Donruss.

botn 06-20-2016 09:15 PM

It is estimated that there were more than 4 million of each card produced by Donruss in 1988. So those short prints are probably closer to 1 million than 2 million.

MOO,
Greg

The Chicago National is not held anywhere near downtown Chicago and is actually held in a pretty nice area... Atlantic City has major crime issues, including issues that have happened recently in the major casinos, not just the shady back alley areas. Collectors need to be aware of these issues and prepare accordingly when carrying large amounts of money or expensive cards....

Jewish-collector 06-21-2016 08:39 AM

On a serious note, I really don't think this will be a good show for sellers. The 2003 Atlantic City National was horrible for sellers. Why will this National be any different ? Many of the west coast collectors are not going, so it basically it will be a larger version of the "East Coast" White Plains show.

Not sure its worth going.

glynparson 06-21-2016 10:23 AM

Atlantic City

I go several times a year usually with a decent amount of cash and have had a total of zero problems. It is like any city and is not the wild west like some here seem to be making it.

I live in New Jersey, so Atlantic City is always my favorite location, but I'm not sure how people are getting to the event. The AC airport isn't nearly the hub as O'Hare nor is the convention center going to command the same sort of foot traffic that Baltimore does (though more than Chicago). It will be interesting to see. We're currently in a popular time in the hobby - outside collectors are clearly investing in high end rookie cards and there is a lot of bargains to be had at the lower end. I'll be there this year and very much looking forward to it.

JustCollectVP 06-21-2016 12:46 PM

So, it sounds like aside the "news" from the Atlantic City National will be piqued by a potential truckload of 1988 Donruss (perhaps a Devon White PSA 10), little Johnny riding his bike from Absecon Heights with his grandpa's 1955 Topps commons or maybe just a few racket-boys coming in off the promenade looking to knock some heads.

My guess is that there will be something of significance and fresh to the hobby that ends up being graded by an attendee.

Jobu 06-21-2016 01:19 PM

I don't know about "major", but the most shocking find will be that Johnny V is actually very quiet and reserved in person. :D
