What if? Hit homerun buy die before
getting to first base...like the guy gets a heart attack because hes so happy he hit a homerun...
does he get credit for a single? what happens... |
Not sure if the rules are the same in softball and baseball, but this actually happened here in Ellensburg (2009). In a game versus Central Washington University, a Western Oregon player hit a homerun (the first of her career), and in her excitement tore her ACL when she missed first base. She collapsed to the bag in a heap, and the ruling was "a two run single" if she was unable to make it around the bases. Unable to be touched by teammates, she was then carried around the bases by CWU teammates Mallory Holtman and Liz Wallace.
Here's the short ESPN documentary, great sportsmanship: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UEDBnKahuNs As for dropping dead BEFORE reaching first, I have no idea. |
When an accident incapacitates a player or an umpire;
(A) If an accident to a runner is such as to prevent him from proceeding to a base to which he is entitled, as on a home run hit out of the playing field, or an award of one or more bases, a substi- tute runner shall be permitted to complete the play. |
Can you say Jim Creighton?
- not a heart attack, but same results. . |
Could have happened with Kirk Gibson on that gimpy leg.:D
|
Then the batter should worry more about the rounding the bases and less about playing craps...

What?
