That's Brooklyn coach Clyde Sukeforth
|
Thank you...any idea on the year
|
I have a sneaky suspicion that might be Jackie's debut game. Sukeforth managed that game in the wake of Durocher's year long suspension. I hesitate to tell you that because I was gonna offer you 5 bucks and I was hoping you'd take it. :D That is one awesome, awesome photo. Where do you guys find this stuff? Damn.
Check out 13 seconds into the video. http://m.mlb.com/video/topic/7112960...ackie-robinson |
I agree with what Dewey said and can add that Robinson is wearing the 1946 home jersey with the zipper and Suke is wearing the 1947 version that was button down. Sometimes jerseys were carried over a year or two at the beginning of the season. From pictures I've seen the Dodgers generally wore white undershirts in '47 and blue in '48. A real uniform specialist like Dave Grob can speak more definitively of course.

Dewey,
That video is spectacular. Pause the video at 13 seconds and you will see this exact photo. It was filmed from and angle more to Jackie's right, but they are standing exactly in the same position. April 15, 1947. Great job finding that. Joey, Congrats on the pickup. |

1947 Jackie Robinson Uniform
Great photo and great thread. Sorry I am so to the party on this one. The zipper style, as pointed out earlier is from previous years, most likely 1946 and with a number change to 42. The 1947 Dodgers jersey would have likely been ordered in mid March, but remember that Robinson's contract was not announced as being purchased from Montreal until 10 April, a scant five days prior to the Opening Day. Hence the need to outfit him with something already on hand.
With respect to carry overs, my research indicates this was fair more common that folks might want to admit and these "carry over uniforms" were frequently part of the annual uniform inventory. When a team made the post season, this often added a fourth uniform to the inventory for a given season/calendar year. At times when I am researching a uniform for a client, they will insist they have a "photo match" (a phrase I detest by the way). I then ask them if they have accounted for and excluded the other uniforms the player might have worn during the season. The answer almost uniformly (no pun intended) comes back that they have not... Great photo and congratulations.. Dave Grob |
Wow, what a cool thread!
Joey, that is one terrific photo, especially with the history surrounding it. Congrats! |

+1 - my 1949 Bowman Jackie Robinson arrived today & we Georgians still proudly claim him as a native son! . |
Dude you can't have MLK, Hulk Hogan, and Jackie. Let us UCLA fans/Californians claim Jackie and we'll claim the bloated contract of Kanye West in the deal. We'll trade you back Mark McGwire and George Lucas.
