Jackson Proof

I guess it would not qualify for the undervalued REA items thread on the main board

Is that one yours?

begsu1013 04-30-2016 02:56 PM

it is.

traded it a while back, to a gentleman who is well known but asked not to be disclosed, for a perfectly centered 57 mantle+, which i still miss.

and it looks like we both are doing well.

It looks like you've got a pretty rare and valuable card there. I had never heard about it before today. Nice to see you back on the post war forum where you belong by the way. :D

77 Proofs

SCD lists the Jackson and a dozen or so other 77 proof cards that are different in some way from the regular version of their issued card. In one case the player was dropped and does appear in the set at all. An uncut sheet with many of the cards involved on it sold not too long back

There are two players who did not appear in the 1977 Topps set that were on proof cards. Danny Thompson, who died after the 1976 season, and Jerry Grote, who said he was retiring after the 1976 season and Topps mistakenly believed him.

Proofs

There is a 3d one in the current REA auction , Lee Richard as a Cardinal

A centered 57 Mantle is something of a unicorn. Can you post a picture for us Mantle fans? Thanks.

You are correct sir, I didn't know that one existed. Found an image on Google. ETA, I found the original uncut sheet that Willie Davis and Jason Thompson were on for 1977 Topps, and it looks like John Hale of the Dodgers was the card that replaced Richard in between Davis and Thompson.

The Jackson proof card currently at $50K before the BP.

I knew the Jackson will go for big $'s....but wow... I guess I will have to settle for my Fitzmorris Royals Uniform Version...

It's kind of funny Ricky that most collectors would be oblivious to how unique that card is. Great item

Good detective work as usual Cliff

Please forgive my ignorance, but given the number of Topps proofs and such out there for modern cards, what makes this one so special?

When I sorted the REA results by highest price, I was shocked to see this, but a quick Google shows one selling for 6k back in 2006.

Jackson collectors or Topps proof collectors, or both?

Cheers,
Steve

You add in one Keith Olbermann, for example, and it may not be a terribly surprising outcome.

begsu1013 05-01-2016 01:30 PM

i think keith already had one, but doesn't mean he doesn't like duplicates either....think he had 3 wagners at one point, right?

ALR-bishop 05-01-2016 01:32 PM

Jackson

SCD has had a separate listing for this and a half dozen silimilar proofs from the 77 set ( similar in that the proof differs significantly from the final card that was released in the set). Also Bob Lemke and Olberman both highlighted the Jackson in SCD articles. Olberman's was a two part series about Topps proofs in general. The card is on the list of both proof collectors and Jackson master collectors.

Topps Proof comes in many forms...progressive proofs of regularly issued cards are usually plentiful...the ones that are special to collectors who are into these variations are the ones that never was issued as part of the regular set, because of trades, team changes, etc.... the poses are different, uniforms and team designations could also vary as well... in this case its also a HOF player... it all adds up to being a very desirable card.

About 20+ years ago I bought an 8 card panel for the Nolan Ryan card. When I compared all the cards to the issued version, I found the Manny Trillo had the CUBS printed in a different color.
