Next best Honus Wagner Card
Do not have a Honus card in my collection and obviously wont be owning the T206 anytime soon. Would love thoughts on what people think is the second best card to own of the Flying Dutchman.
Thank you! |
I'm going to answer the question I want to answer, which is "What is the best Honus Wagner card other than the T206?" This is not his second best card in my opinion but his best card. http://sports.ha.com/itm/baseball/19...a/7116-79008.s

My favorite is the Philadelphia Caramel E95
|
For me, it's pretty much a toss-up between the E90-2 and E95.

Value wise the E107 has gotta be up there, but for affordable cards the E95 Wagner is a great looking card IMO.
|
E92 (throwing). Just look at that awesome background.
Edited to add: But if you like portraits, I have to agree with the E90-2 suggestion above. http://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/PrUAAO...c-/s-l1600.jpg |

Here is mine:

Toss-up for me. The M110 was kinda spendy but it's high on my list. The PC796 is gnarly and was relatively affordable.

E107 followed by W600, imho

I'll go with the Reccius Louisville card just to stir up some controversy.....:)

All great options. Truly, there are no "bad" Honus Wagner cards. :) Here are a couple other options to consider.
M116 - Blue or Pastel are nice portraits http://www.collectorfocus.com/images...fe-hans-wagner E101, E102, etc batting pose is also pretty cool. http://www.collectorfocus.com/images...1-honus-wagner Good luck on your decision. Every collection needs a Wagner! ;) |

E107, JKA, W600, Texas Tommy type 2, American League Publishing... All amazing cards. One of those would be my pick.

If you can track down the owner and talk him out of it, the Allegheny would be great, if not, here's another one with great eye appeal and affordability:

I'm gonna put my two cents in and agree with A.J. on the 1914-15 Cracker Jack. (I sure wish I owned one!)

A few others I still have, not shown yet as candidates.

for me the second best Wagner is anyone with the same portrait pose. I used to have an E 90–2... I hope to replace it with another portrait card someday.
I always like the tiptop bread because it's like a jumbo t206! |

The E103 is my favorite Wagner.

In terms of cards that are actually obtainable on a middle class budget like my own, the E92 throwing pose would be high on the list (posted above by David J.). |

I'd probably go e107 here but if I'm wanting to be realistic, I'll go with the scarcest one I can find....

I vote for the E90-2 as well. Love the blue portrait
|
E107 if someone wants to buy one for me. E103 if I'm paying for it myself. The E90-2 is a great option as well though as are others mentioned.

What a great topic for a thread.
These two for me. 1902 W600 with Type 1 mount and ca. 1912 E300 Plow's Candy. |
Awesome Kevin!

Surprised there is only one mention of this card. It's on the bucket list for me.

I am surprised his "Rookie" hasn't been shown:

My second favorite card from the SportingLife Postcard series
|
Honus is on my HOF list for acquisition in the next 12 months hopefully.
Thanks to all of you I have narrowed it down to e93, PC796 or the Sporting Life M116. Looking forward to adding one of the contenders. :D |
I'm partial to the E107 Breisch Williams

That ALPC is a great card too. You should show yours, Jeff. To add yet another of my favorites that hasn't been mentioned yet... Pittsburgh Leader http://i86.servimg.com/u/f86/13/04/98/39/pittsb10.jpg http://i86.servimg.com/u/f86/13/04/98/39/pittsb11.jpg |

1912 Colgan's Tin Top
I have a 1912 Colgan's Tin Top Honus Wagner SGC 60 in safe deposit box. According to PSA population, they have only graded 1 of this issue - ever, in all grades. Compare that pop to all the T206 Wagner's. The Skydash find had one that SGC graded, and I know of one other SGC graded copy in existence.

I'm guessing you'd have to combine the total populations of his 20 rarest cards or so (excluding modern manufactured rarities) to add up to the known numbers of his T206 portrait.

I always found it amazing that the card manufacturers seemed to always indicate Honus played for Pittsburg, when right on the front of his uniform it says Pittsburgh.

Here's another nice one.

With enough money and opportunity the E107 would be my second cab off the rank.
Third choice would the one I decided on, combining scarcity, photographic accuracy, and rare pose.... |

My "next best" Wags.. and as close as I'll ever get to the best. I like most/all the other Wags portraits too (E90-2, M116 either background, E103, etc), and love E95 and the E90-1/E92/E105 throwing pose. Sweet cards everyone.
