1918 Joe Jackson item - neat find!
 

...so stumbled upon this item which at 1st glance wouldn't do much for you, but once opened there is an almost 3 foot panoramic pullout attached of the Shipyard team Shoeless Joe Jackson played for in 1918 the season that was interupted by WW1.

It also mentions Ruth playing but this panoramic is Jackson's Team and I know this is always fun, "is it or isn't it Joe Jackson", I have to say it looks like him dead center. I don't think the Babe played in this game.

Dave, it was up on Ebay with a bad title, no mention of Ruth or Jackson, and the main pix was just of the booklet, but I remembered SJJ played for a Steel Company / Shipyard so once in the listing there was the pix of the contents.

Yah it looks much clearer in person, but still a lil' tough to make out the players. And just speculating, but Jackson was much more popular then Ruth in 1918, Ruth while a tremendous pitcher was just starting to get in the limelight, Jackson was the headliner as they lead off with him in the article too.

So my guess is Jackson was the centerpiece of the photo and those baggie pants look like him, but who knows. My eyes suck too so that doesn't help.

EDITED TO SAY: looks like I was wrong, great stuff Joe, reading the old newspaper articles headline says "All eyes on Ruth". So looks like they shared the stage and Ruth played !B and Pitched, and Rogers Hornsby on the other team....WOW pretty cool! (Fellow Black Sox-er Lefty Williams pitched as well.)

I was thinking that too, that in 1918 Jackson would be the bigger draw, but article reads "All Eyes on Ruth".... "Babe was the magnet that drew people to the grounds..." Very interesting. Great pick up.

Thought board members might like to check out this enclosed link with telegram referencing Jackson as well as other major leaguers during the war. The pictured telegram talks about the team and mentions Mr Wagner and I think Lefty Williams. Also very interesting is that Joe and most likely his wife cut out and placed the newspaper cartoon about owner Comisky`s attitude towards players in the "industrial leagues".
