Sullivan backs

Just wanted to let you know that Sullivan doesn't come with a Polar Bear back.

Your only other confirmed options besides Piedmont or Sweet Caporal are going to be Sovereign, Brown Hindu, or Old Mill.

I feel like I should have known that. Had I looked at my checklist. Series, players, and back combinations aren't my strong point quite yet. Still very rusty on that.

I thought it was also made with an El Principe de Gale back (although I've never seen one). Is this wrong? This is what confuses me: http://www.vintagecardprices.com/car...lue-Prices.htm

I have it as being possible just not confirmed. I'm sure Jeff Throm would know. He's the EPDG expert :D

Site is confusing. Sullivan is possible but unconfirmed, so at this point I honestly do not believe it exists.

BTW, example of why I would highly doubt that site:
http://www.vintagecardprices.com/car...lue-Prices.htm

It just doesn't exist......yet they imply that it does, just like with the Sullivan.

Shit I was hoping that of the many times I've seen your EPDGs I simply overlooked a Sullivan and you had duplicates :(

pbspelly 04-27-2016 06:34 AM

I've had my eye out for a while and kind of suspected that it didn't exist. Just like I also suspect there aren't any Sporting Life Cabinets (W600) with him either, even though he is listed.

Joshchisox08 05-11-2016 08:25 AM

Looking for PSA here. Sov back would be awesome but really any back will do.

Jantz 02-03-2017 05:00 AM

Josh

Some of Sullivan's cards have crop lines on the back & one back has a plate scratch. Just throwing that out there.

Good Luck on your back run.

Sullivan seems pretty scarce for some reason or another. I've always liked the card and I'm a Sox fan so him being the first real catcher for them kind of makes me like it even more.

Tom S. 02-03-2017 04:30 PM

Josh, I hope that you'll be able to pick up the Sullivan cards you need.

He is actually the only one that I have been able to complete the back run on so far for my White Sox T206 master set.

I've seen a Sovereign once. I used to own a torn up Old Mill I traded to Luke, and I've only seen a Hindu once (Also owned by Luke).

Those three are going to be the ultimate challenge.

Just made a deal with a board member for this card. Thanks to Mike P. for getting me underway :D
Piedmont I bought off a board member so long ago I can't remember who sold it to me.

Good luck with the back run Josh. Sullivan is one of my favorite portraits in
the set. Although this isn't related to a back run there are a few Sullivan's
with damage to the U.

Pat, thanks I didn't realize there was so many idiosyncrasies with his card. So we have plate scratches and the "U" damages.

Do you know of any theories behind any of this?

Hey Josh,

I forgot to mention that the SC350/25 you picked up is a beauty for a 3.

There is a plate scratch that shows that Sullivan and Chase (Pink Portrait)
were in the same sheet position on different PD150 sheets.

Both Sullivan and Chase (Pink) are found with several different crop marks.
Here are a few of the Sullivan crops.

Pat,

you're proving that this site is a great place for people with the best knowledge in the hobby.

Thank you for sharing this it makes me like the card even more and I had no idea about any of it :)

Not looking to sell any of these (some are not in the greatest condition, anyway), but you might find them interesting. I have these Sullivan backs, which I believe to be the complete set as far as types (not including differences in numbers, such as 150/25, etc.), although, as noted earlier in this thread, there is a tiny bit of doubt about whether an El Principe De Gales exists.

In case you are interested, the portrait used on Sullivan's T206 was based on a photo taken by Carl Horner sometime prior to 1903 and reused over and over. I own all of the other Sullivan items shown here except for the Breisch Williams. The Horner cabinet portrait of him in a suit was, undoubtedly, taken at the same sitting as the photo of him in uniform that was used as a basis for all of the cards. Someone else here on the board has the Horner cabinet of him in uniform.

Just so you know, he was my great grandfather, which is the main reason I have amassed all of this.

That is quite the collection you have there! That photo of him in the suit is amazing

Great Grandfather wow! Did you ever get a chance to meet him?

pbspelly 02-08-2017 10:44 AM

Unfortunately I never got to meet him. He died before I was born.

Still a wicked cool story and really awesome you're related to the first Sox catcher!

Wish I had some of your items pictured above :D

Joshchisox08 02-23-2017 04:43 PM

Picked up another beauty and a real steal at that $33 for a PSA 3. I'll take that all day. New card added in photos above.

Anyone have another PSA for me to knock off the list?

scotty21690 02-23-2017 06:27 PM

Hmm....

Matthew Rhys.....is that you??

I did but didn't have the cash at the time :(

I think the Old Mill will be the most difficult.

If you are still in need of a SC 150/30, I saw a couple for sale on eBay

https://www.ebay.com/itm/1910-T206-B...sAAOSw-jFaGFGM

https://www.ebay.com/itm/T206-Sweet-...sAAOSwWGtZeoaN

I'm not the seller

Cheers

jtlake67 01-08-2018 12:05 PM

I've got a Sweet Cap 150/30 PSA 3 for sale on one of my posts. $50 total ($45 + $5 shipping).

Tim

Joshchisox08 01-08-2018 02:28 PM

Guys thanks for reaching out to me. I realllllllllly appreciate it.

@Tim right now I'm trying to work a deal for a Hindu. Needless to say I'd have to put all other backs aside right now lol. I don't see his Hindu pop-up to often and someone from the board was nice enough to reach out to me.

If you do have that card when I get funds restored then I'll def get back to you!

jtlake67 01-08-2018 04:52 PM

Gee, I though a Sweet Cap Factory 30 would be much more exciting than a Hindu!! Good luck on your Sullivan chase!
