haha...well played on the April Fools joke. Great dodgers pickups, those look to be in very nice shape, especially the Snider.

Did your folks follow them to LA or lose interest once they left Brooklyn?

OK, definitely had me until I scrolled, call me gullible. Love the Dodgers. There is something that just screams of that era about the Brooklyn Dodgers.

Nope, they didn't follow them. When the Dodgers left Ebbets Field, they ripped out the hearts of everyone in Brooklyn, Queens, Long Island and everywhere else. It was unforgivable. Except for taking my brothers and I to Shea Stadium in 1976, my dad never really watched another baseball game his entire life. Same with my mom. Dem Bums had such an unbreakable connection to the community and it's probably something that we'll never see again.

I guess I've got a similar appreciation for the Brooklyn Dodgers; just took a different road to get there. I grew up in the LA area in the 70s. Arriving today, I couldn't resist this '54 Bowman Campanella.

Agree with Dan on the 54's. Nice looking set for sure. I'm digging both of the Campy's!

Just got these in today. Love the Dimaggio for some reason. This and the 38' goudey are probably my favorites of his.

I couldn't resist picking up this Bob Feller. I grew up hearing stories of his prowess from my father who watched him pitch on numerous occasions. I also had the privilege of speaking to him for extended periods during spring training vacation trips to Arizona. When he passed baseball lost a true treasure and ambassador.

I paid $175 less than other PSA 8s with similar centering in older slabs without the OC designation. They seem to have gotten much stricter on this qualifier. I won't break it out and submit it to SGC. Out of curiosity does any one have an opinion how SGC would grade such a card?

You guys mean to tell me that you actually entertained the possibility that he picked up seven '52 Topps Mickey Mantles graded PSA 8 (one being a 9), and a Beckett 8? A single PSA 8 Mantle commands over $300k. A 9 would likely bring double that, at least. That's $2.5 million of cards pictured....on April 1st...am I missing something? I'm not trying to be a hard ass, but that seems implausible.

Mike, I agree that PSA has gotten much stricter with the OC qualifier. To be honest, I wish they would just develop a set of guidelines, and stick to them. In my eyes, they damage their reputation with their inconsistency over time. A PSA 8 graded three years ago should meet the same standards that a PSA 8 graded in 2016 does. But that's not the case, and this debacle has spurred the whole regrading game. I have a big problem with that, because ultimately, the collector suffers, and the company grading the cards makes more money.

As to your question on how SGC would grade it, I think it gets a 7 with them. Just for comparison, here's my '56 Topps Feller graded by SGC as a 7. I've had this card for more than six months, so who knows, maybe they've changed their standards, too.

Regardless, it's a really nice example you have there. Feller was a machine, and I wish I could have met him just once. I've long had the utmost respect for Rapid Robert.

Anyhow, I'm completely happy with my card, and can't see the urge to upgrade it ever creeping up. There are too many other cards I want, so this one will sit in my collection until they stick me in the ground. :D

Darren and Bob, put me down, too, as one loving those '54 Bowman Dodgers. If I ever get a De Lorean time machine, I'm going back to that season to watch the boys play at Ebbets Field. That's not the year they finally beat the Yankees, obviously, but they had a hell of an offense that year. Duke and Gil both hit 40 bombs and drove in 130, Jackie was still an All Star, Pee Wee had a career year at the plate, and though Campy had a real down year, he was still capable of the big swing. He rebounded in a big way in 1955. And my favorite Dodger twirler from that era, "Oisk", paced the team with 18 wins.

Carl, that DiMaggio is outstanding, but I can't stop looking at the '57 Kluszewski. Look at those guns, too. Jesus.

That said, we have some board members who have some very deep pockets. So for one of them to pull the trigger on one or all of those Mantles wouldn't surprise me much.

Oh, I know. I wasn't trying to be a stick in the mud, but I guess it kind of came off that way. And, you're absolutely right, Lou. Nothing should really surprise me. Not only do some collectors have deep pockets, but they've also been collecting a heck of a lot longer than me. It wouldn't surprise me at all if somebody on the forum had a collection passed down to them, and some of those '52 Mantles could have been ones they had graded.

I showed my father the latest copy of The Intelligent Collector from Heritage, and it included a centerfold showing what some of the best auction results were from 2015. There was a PSA 8 '55 Clemente, a PSA 10 '61 Clemente, a '52 Topps Mantle, etc. Dad was born in '47, so he would have collected some of those years. Grandma threw them out. :mad:

You and me both. Our lcs in Waukesha (Wisconsin) always had the display case filled with really nice cards from the 60s and 70s, some older. But noooo, I wanted to buy '87 Topps wax. Not my moment in the sun, for sure. :p

What is that issue and what is the size?

1961 Phillies Cigar premium. 6 by 9 or thereabouts.

Been getting too many shiny new cards, needed to get some real cardboard in my mailbox.

Added a '61 and '63 Harvey Haddix, who in my mind pitched the greatest game in MLB history. I also added two nice Cash's, one of my favorite players to read about, what a character!

I don't think so, too big. 8 by 10 toploader for me works fine.

Won this last night. The only Bowman issue of Hammerin' Hank. The centering just sucked me right in.

Whoops, accidentally posted this to the March thread by mistake...

Right or wrong, I tend to lump Al Simmons and Chuck Klein together, so I decided a while back to get cards of each of them for my Top 100 display from the same set--1933 DeLong. A N54 member gave me a terrific deal on Simmons, but I struggled to find an affordable Klein with good centering and color.

After much searching and losing out on a PWCC auction, I finally bit the bullet. And shown with it is my Simmons from last year.

Wow, just had a chance to scroll through the whole month of pickups to date. Some really great Micks, even ignoring the April Fools. I'd never seen the Cigar one, nor had I seen such a nice copy of the Dan-Dee.

I suppose I'm the flip side of all the devastated Brooklyn fans. For me, I can't even picture my childhood without Garvey, Fernando, Ron Cey, and the rest of the Los Angeles Dodgers. For me, that was a magical time and a magical team. But wow, I can only imagine the awful taste that move left in the mouths of New York fans.

Happy to see all those 1978 Tigers. That was my first year really throwing myself into collecting. Was literally looking for loose change in the couch and (okay, I admit it) stealing nickels and dimes from my mom's parking meter change to buy my packs and FINALLY complete my set. The Garvey was like gold at my school...you could trade it for ANYTHING you wanted. I remember this one kid showed up who had tons of old stuff...Musial, Mays, even some Goudey...I don't recall exactly what I got for my 1978 Steve Garvey and Dave Kingman (the awful airbrush job), but it was quite a haul. Of course, easy come easy go.

And finally, love the Norm Cash cards. I can't believe he posed in a bunt position. I would have guessed he bunted zero times in his entire MLB career. Such great numbers in that '61 season, but obviously overshadowed by Maris/Mantle.

Okay, I'm sure I just broke the record for longest Pickup Thread post without actually posting a pickup. (Oh wait...Bill the 'Stache went 8 times as long once to school me (correctly!) on how over-rated Chuck Klein is. :)

This looked awfully good for a PSA 4, so I had to pick it up.

You know what's always struck me as funny about Norm Cash? He doesn't have an 'In Action' card in the 1972 set, but his regular card is obviously a game-time action shot during one of his (helmet-less) at-bats.
