T206 1982 Article
 

While doing some spring cleaning yesterday. I came across an article that I saved from Dec 1982 BHCR. I think this is the issue that featured the T206 reprints (long since gone). I was in 10th grade when this came out and my interest was in Brett, Yount, Jackson, Rose, Ryan, Dawson etc. My local Baseball Card Shop in NJ had a binder full of T206's and a dozen or so in the display case. I would just walk by and think "that's old why would anyone want them" while on my way to get the latest and greatest Topps packs. :mad: If we could only turn back time! I'm not sure how accurate the price list was back then but at $4250 for the set it seems like the steal of the century. Enjoy the scans.

Look at those prices!! I think I could scrap of $12 K for a Honus Wagner card!!

Thanks for posting. The appreciation for T206 subject scarcity in the early 1980s is remarkable. Also, it is interesting that non-HOFers have not quite kept up with HOFers in terms of price increases.

Cool! Baseball Hobby Card Report was Renata Galasso's publication, back when she was the leading card dealer in the world (along with her husband Bill Hongach). I have issues 2 through 5 of BHCR, with issues 2, 3, and 4 also including centerfolds of T206 reprints. I thought I also had issue #1, from which this article is taken, but if so I can't find it. Issue 5 has an interview with Renata Galasso that's illustrated with many pictures of her holding up rare cards.

My father and I had a long conversation with Bill a few weekends ago when we ran into him at the White Plains show here in NY. He has some interesting stories :) .

btw, I was going through a box of publications a day or two ago and found I had most of Tom Colliers hobby publications including checklists and tons of letters. Cool stuff from about 1970..

I always think how cheap cards were back then until I remember that in 1982 the $160 Cobb was a lot of $ back then. I done a quick search and seen several that recently sold in the $600-$800 range. Seems like pretty even $ then to now to me.

That period was, I believe, about the only time in my life that I could have afforded a T206 Wagner--instead, the money went into purchasing, prepping and street-racing big-block Corvettes! Oh well.

I ran an inflation calculator on $120 bucks in 1982 and it comes out to $294.85. I will buy just about every T206 Ty COBB you are willing to sell at $300. Jk. That's a good sign that the hobby had had strong growth above inflation.
