Article by Elwwod Scharf about R319 when he was a kid

Hi All:

As many of you know Elwood Scharf was the GODFATHER of Exhibit cards. He certainly taught me a lot about them back in the day. However, he collected other things as well.

I recently came across an article he wrote for the 10th Annual Mid West
(Detroit) Sports Collectors Convention program in 1979 about the 1933 Goudey set.

Thought some of you might like to read it and see a photo of Woody with his wife and some college punk in the middle.

Thanks for posting these, Fred. It's appreciated. A lot of us love studying the old hobby even if we weren't a part of it per se' (I was 13 in '74 but not into the hobby anymore than collecting cards with friends...but everyone did back then.)

Blast from the past....

Elwood used to come to my house and my dad's store in the 1970's & 80's. Very nice man, absolute gentleman. John England was also a friend of my father. I believe dad bought his book collection when he passed away many years ago. Also a very nice man from my recollection. Most of the collecting fraternity in those days were very sociable and always helpful to the younger collectors. Today's dealers/collectors could certainly learn from how those men cultivated an interest in collecting for the younger set. Not like many of the "don't bother me" dealers that flood today's market.
