Auction Catalogs
Just a friendly reminder to our great Auction House friends- my receiving a catalog after your auction closes is annoying, and probably not cost effective. Has happened twice in the last month. Send em out early guys! Thanks.
|
Agreed. Even worse when you live in Canada. Zero issue every arrive in time.
|
Actually with the auctons being online and good digital photos, why mail catalogs at all. You look at them once or twice and in the recycle bin they go.
|
Why catalogs? To garner consignments.

I may be in the minority here but I'm with kmac32 on this one. 15 second shelf life in the time it takes me to walk from my mailbox to recycle bin. Digital has rendered them obsolete for me. And they've done nothing to influence me one way or the other on whom consign with. |

I don't know how much they influence my bidding but I like getting the catalogs. They're fun to page through on the couch. Sometimes I miss the net54 post and for some reason I'm not getting AH emails so I forget about an auction. When I get the catalog I will go to the site and check it out at least.

I keep them all and grab a couple to flip through on a rainy day.

I travel by air almost weekly for a living.
Rarely does a flight go by that I do not review a catalog. I never get my computer out on a plane, glad to have them. |

I liked the idea H&S had a while back, that if you opted out of receiving the catalog, you got some sort of small discount on each purchase ($10?). I haven't seen that advertised by them (or anyone else) any longer; I thought it might be a good way to cut down on some printing and mailing costs.
I would gladly accept a discount of 1-2% on buyer's premiums to not receive a catalog. If auction houses put a cap on what that discount might be (say it maxes out at $20) to protect themselves against that discount on major purchases, they could save a bunch of money. What say you, auction houses? |
Use For catalogs
I was thinking : Dougie could probably use some reading material in the slammer. How about anyone with old Legendary Auction catalogs sending them to him ?

Smell
I love the catalogs. Something about getting them and opening them up when you have a good chunk of time to look them over. The smell...especially REA... And the photos and the descriptions. And I am under 40 and these catalogs are much more interested in the catalogs than the online sites. I decide to bid based on the catalogs. And I am probably in the minority

When REA catalogs arrive at my doorstep (especially when they are cello-wrapped with a "prize"), it is a foundation-cracking, Christmas-morning-like event.
Other catalogs... meh. |

I don't think the modern catalogs would work very well, but the old Kip Young's probably would! |
