Help Identifying Mickey Mantle Card..Hand Cut?

I got this card today and I simply couldn't find anything about it, not sure if its an older or newer print. It definitely seems to be hand cut by the borders around the "cut". As seen in the photos it is numbered and if the "Past Year" stat's on the back are indeed true to the date of the card then it would date 1956 as the "past Year" stats are those of his 1955 season. The case it's in had a piece of tape across the back, I did my best to remove all the residue. I will greatly appreciate any and all information you could provide me with!!

looks to be as what the 56 bowmans were supposed to look like.

may just be a hand made card.

it's cool though!

edit: how many years was it until he played 658 games, 2411 at bats, etc.

Mickey

Pretty sure this was a card that was cut out of a 1990's baseball card magazine price guide

Google images struck out.

I'm in agreement with this. In fact if I dig deep enough I think I have one.

Looks like a 1958 hires root beer . I don't know if Manlte was in that set . I remember looking for a Mays . I don't know if that's real . The bottom should have a cut edge . I hope it's real !

1958 Hires Root Beer. Only problem is Mantle isn't in the set. Like someone else stated I think it is a magazine cut from one of those "Cards that never were" sets.

Caveat: The set started with card number 10. Cards 1-9 were test issues. Take that for what you want. Considering Mantle isn't on the checklist, the back is completely wrong, and the lack of tabs I'm 99.9% sure it is a modern fantasy piece.

kinda proud of myself:

1958 Hire's Root Beer Baseball Cards a Tasty Challenge

"That gives the card a knothole-like feel to it. That design looks strikingly similar to one of the prototypes Bowman was considering for its 1956 release ..."

It's not real, it's a fantasy card of some sort.

It's a Bob Lemke creation!

It is from

A late 1980s early 1990s issue of Baseball Cards magazine. They often had similar cards as a cutout insert in the magazine.

moeson 02-13-2016 09:44 AM

Nope, it's a Bob Lemke creation (see above).

Yep, that was inserted in the October 1988 issue of baseball card magazine

moeson 02-13-2016 10:30 AM

My bad

Bob Lemke 02-13-2016 02:48 PM

As correctly pointed out, this is not one of my fantasy/custom cards . . . but close.

I was publisher of Baseball Cards magazine in 1986 when this was part of a three-card insert. Read the blog post linked above for details as to why the Mantle doesn't have a 1988 copyright date as intended.

Also sorry to report that I no longer have panels available as offered in the blog post.

Thanks everyone!

I just wanted to say thanks to everyone who showed interest and for the help. So informative that I have a few others I am posing to ask for your input. One is a Jackie Robinson "portrait", the front is pictured the back is blank like a photo. I know there are a few "portrait series cards from the 50's and wasn't sure if it looked authentic. Then I have a Bucky Dent "error?" card the front is Dent and the back is...Not. I also would love to hear everyone's input on the 1933 Goudy Sports Kings Carl Hubble which was also a nice surprise in my recent box purchase.

Here is the Robinson portrait with the Goudy for a aspect on size

Hubbell is fake, unfortunately. What box did you get it in?

petey 02-15-2016 09:51 AM

Just a random box of mostly signed cards I won at auction which had a bunch of unsearched items in it as well. I figured the Hubbell was fake as when i went to look at the sides for the card for a cut pattern they were orange and the surface color was so "deep" do you know anything about the Jackie Robinson "portrait".
