1871 Troy Haymakers Player photo & Scorecard

This Player photo / Scorecard is very rarely seen. It's not the most aesthetically appealing piece; however, it's historical value and scarcity are very significant.

The Troy Haymakers participated in the first professional pennant race of 1869. They joined the first BB professional league (National Association) in 1871.
Their 1871 W-L record was 13-15. In 1872, they improved with a 15-10 W-L record (5th place standing). However, this was their last season due to their
claim of insufficient funding.

The team roster included 12 players. If any one on this forum has any of these Player photo cards of the other players, please post them. I have 2 others
that I will post later in this thread.

Pictured here is William "Clipper" Flynn whose BA = .338 in the 29-game season of 1871.

Awesome piece

It's not the most aesthetically appealing piece....

Ted, I take exception with your comment. :) This piece is truly amazing and I think it has plenty of eye appeal.

Thanks for sharing!

Neat piece. I Love the visual appeal of 19th pieces such as this.

Great scorecard, Ted.

Another great item Ted! I love the font and the ads, very cool.

1871 Troy Haymakers Player photo & Scorecard

Thanks guys......I'm really happy that you appreciate these extraordinarily rare pieces of early BB history.

Pictured here is Brooklyn born Tom York, whose 15-year career BA = .273 (played with 6 different teams, 1871 - 1885).

I've seen a lot of early scorecards but I'm not familiar with these. Beautiful cards.

Are these recent acquisitions or have you had them tucked away?

Nice scorecards, Ted. Here's a later one from 1884 of Boston's John Morrill from a Beaneaters/Quakers game.

Those are beauties, Ted!

1871 Troy Haymakers Player photo & Scorecard

Pictured here is Philadelphia born John McMullin. A southpaw, he started pitching for Troy in 1870. In 1871, he was the only starting pitcher on the Troy roster.
His 1871 pitching W - L record was 12 - 15 for Troy.

In 1874, as an Outfielder for the Philadelphia A's, John batted .346 in a 55- game season.

1871 Troy Haymakers Player photo & Scorecard

Thanks....Rob McK. and Kevin C.

I wish I had more of these cards of the 12 players on the Haymakers' roster.

But, you never know, perhaps someone on this forum will surprise us and post one (or more) of these 1871 cards.

Fantastic early scorecards Ted, have you seen others?

GKreindler 02-07-2016 08:37 AM

Um, Ted, those scorecards are friggin' amazing. Most appealing to me are the photographs of Flynn, McMullen and York.

Just incredible.

Hi Joe

Thanks for the compliment.

Many years ago, I did see a couple more of these 1871 Photo/Scorecards; but, I don't recall which Troy players were on them.

Take care,

Thanks Graig

And, what is also incredible is your artwork.

The panoramic of Mickey Mantle at bat at Yankee Stadium brings back fond memories of when I was a kid seeing him hit a tremendous HR.

Great items, Ted
I have special interest as my mother is from Troy, New York
I was able to purchase this Team Composite from Deacon White's estate several years ago. Sorry for the low resolution scan
It's quite large and present much better
Bottom left is the team's manager and first Jewish player, Lipman Pike a distant relative :)

mybuddyinc 02-07-2016 04:03 PM

It's amazing that things are actually the same 145 years later – ADVETISING !!!!!!!!!!!

No different than the Bud Light ads in today's score cards, really.

I would even bet they had the card printed for free, or major discount, by letting Printer ad on front page (just as they do today).

The Beaneaters/Quakers is also great. BUT, a half a page void of ads is unacceptable !!!!

tedzan 02-07-2016 09:31 PM

Craig

Your Troy Haymakers team piece is really cool. I recognize the photos of Flynn, McMullin, and York on it.

And, you identified Pike....could you also please identify the other 6 players.

Thanks,

19th Century Scorecards

Here's a colorful Scorecard (circa 1880's).

This particular style of a 19th Century Scorecard is not that rare. There are 4 different designs of this card.
I've been hunting for the other 3 versions to complete this set..

This is important to me, so I will reiterate......

You have identified Pike on your Troy Haymakers team piece.....and, I recognize the photos of Flynn, McMullin, and York on it.

Could you also please identify the other 6 players.

Thanks much,

And, thanks again for posting your 1871 Haymakers team composite.....it's truly a wonderful piece of BB history.

Great scorecards, Ted. I haven't seen one of these available in over decade. I'm attaching a scan of one that REA auctioned back in 2004.

tedzan 02-13-2016 06:57 AM

Hi Jeremy

Thanks for posting McGeary.

McGeary and McMullin were the battery for the 1871 Troy Haymakers.

1871 Troy Haymakers Player photo & Scorecard

Let's try for one more go-around to see if we can find any more of these 145-year old goodies.

So far, we have 4 of them on display here. If my homework is correct, there were originally 10
Player photo / Scorecards produced (in unknown quantities) featuring 10 different members of
the Troy Haymakers team.
