Anybody collect football programs? I don't have a bunch but do have some with historical significance.

Browns' first game in the NFL. Defending AAFC Champs vs. defending NFL Champs! Browns won 35-10. Guess the AAFC was pretty decent, huh.

Those are all so great. There are many times that I wish I lived earlier in the 1900s.

I only collect CWU football programs. Not many pre-War programs available, but here's one of them. Strange game between Pacific Lutheran and CWU at a neutral site (Parker Field in Yakima, home of the 1941 Yakima Pippins). Regional historical significance: the first integrated Central Washington football team (James Murphy, and Greg Middleton).

Jeff: It appears more than one Pro game was played that day. The attack on Pearl Harbor began at 8AM (?) right around the start time for games on the East Coast 1PM (?) A quick Google search brought up a partial radio broadcast with a mid game announcement of the on going air strike.

I love the old programs! Jeff- I have the Leeman's and the 1950 Eagles-Browns editions.

I received a 1955 TCU at Arkansas program yesterday in the mail which was great fun to look through during last night's game. That put me at 351 on University of Arkansas programs and I equally enjoy the Arkansas small colleges programs. I have well over 500 of those. There is something about a game program or an old media guide that feels special. I love cards but these publications were actually there at the moment!

As an old SID I get a kick out these. I collect college football guides for all schools, the drawback is space!!!!

Dan- I have a 1931 College of the Ozarks at Arkansas and have 17 others from the 1930's. I have a great friend in Little Rock who has a 1912 Arkansas at Washington (St. Louis) shaped like a football and a hand full of one-sheet programs from the 1918-30 period.

The programs from schools that were small like Arkansas during the pre-1940 era are fairly scarce opposed to programs from some of the larger schools around the country. Attendance at Arkansas games rarely exceeded 10,000 in that early period and was much less pre-30.

The strength and popularity of the Ivy League schools is apparent in the amount of programs from the pre-40 period that are available on eBay. Same goes for the the larger west coast schools and what was then the Big Nine.

I seldom see any pre-40 much less pre-30 programs from the southern schools, even the current SEC members. One of my prized programs is a 1929 Henderson State at Centenary in Shreveport with Cal Hubbard playing for the Gents. I love finding the programs from not only Arkansas but the smaller schools around the state like Henderson and Ouachita Baptist. I was SID at Henderson for many years and a played a year at Arkansas Tech, well didn't really play but was on the team!

My parents were at the game, I heard about it every December 7. Also, if you look in the program my father is listed among the all-time Giants scoring leaders.

Thanks Mike for the information. Both of my folks are from Arkansas and I still follow the Razorbacks. I should say I follow there football, baseball, & basketball teams.

I'm a big fan of the Pottsville Maroons and have lots of Pottsville items. I've only got two programs, though, as they are hard to find.

Buffalo Rangers vs. Pottsville

The Rangers were an original NFL team but were called the All-Americans. Many believe they were hosed out of the 1921 NFL championship by a dirty deed by George Halas of the Chicago Bears. The Buffalo team change their name to the Bisons in 1927 and were out of the league a couple of years later.

The Giants mentioned at the bottom were the pre-Mara Giants - the Charles Brickley Giants that lasted only one year.

That's nice, Mike. From looking at records, seems to be from 1922. I thought Brickley Giants had folded after the 1921 season? Does this mean they stayed around after leaving the NFL? If so, I did not know that.

Awesome schedule Mike. Love the Thanksgiving Day game announcement, I had always bought the NFL story of the Detroit Lions starting this tradition. Great stuff.

I'll take a photo today of the old Hub Furniture Store here in Ellensburg and post it later. The mural on the side of the building must be 75-90 years old.

I know I'm a little late to the thread (been busy with work recently), but I really enjoyed seeing all these programs. I remember there was a program (Jeff, not sure if that is where you got yours) in the first MSB auction from the Florida leg of the Grange tour. That auction also had the 32 championship program from the Bears/Spartans game. I checked with the MSB guys and they said it wasn't the one on Pawn Stars (History Channel). I think there are only about 4 of these known and they all might have smoke damage from a fire in the Bears offices. I do recall seeing a nice one come up at Heritage within the last year.

The Tuffy Leeman's Day program was nagging at me last night and I finally realized why - the Winter 2015 issue of Gridiron Greats has an article by Mar-tin Jay.cobs titled "NFL's Forgotten Games of 12-07-41". Its not clear why, but even though it was the final Sunday of the regular season, there were only three games scheduled - Bears/Cardinals, Giants/Dodgers, and Eagles/Redskins.

Teams in the NFL back then didn't necessarily start or finish on the same weekends. My bet is this had to do with the availability of the stadiums they often shared with baseball. All of the other teams that year had already completed their schedules.

I thought of them recently when the Cardinals lost - since the Cards did win a title in 47, I don't think you can exactly call it a curse, but its a pretty long drought....

Thought of them as well!

The curse is actually from the early 60s when Pottsville first tried to get the NFL to reinstatement them as at least co-champs and the Bidwell's led the effort to block it. Curse still in effect!

Thanks Jeff P. - its crazy, but I found myself rooting against the Cardinals because of the Maroons - I'm not even 100% on the side that the Maroons should get the title (I do feel they were the best team of the season though) - I'd be ok with something like "1925 - no title awarded" in the record books.

And this may be confusing in terms of names, but Jeff wanted to say glad you started posting - does your collecting of tickets and programs have a particular team or era focus?

I've done a lot of research on this issue and unfortunately am not sure Pottsville has any claim to the title :mad:. However the situation is sooo convoluted that I think designating co-champs would have been something that would have appeased Pottsville and put an end to the entire saga. Unfortunately, the Bidwell's were not willing to allow even that to occur.

I don't understand why it's such a big deal to them. The original owner of the Cards (Chris O'Brien) didn't even want the championship and turned it down as he said they hadn't won it on the field. Therefore I root for the curse and hope their team never wins!

I'm thinking about doing an article on the curse for Gridiron Greats sometime in the coming year. Been thinking about it ever since it became clear the Cards would be one of the favorites to go to the SB this year. Gotta finish up a couple of others first, though!

I still think the reason Pottsville never got a sympathetic hearing at the owners meeting was the fight between CC Pyle/Red Grange and Tim Mara over a new franchise in New York City - for two reasons
1) this was a much bigger issue for the life of the NFL than the Pottsville issue
2) Mara's point was that he had territorial rights in New York City, the same issue the Yellow Jackets raised about the Pottsville Notre Dame game, so it was not the time for any compromise on that issue.

Thanks Jeff - I've read some things too - I think it was Joe Horrigan who did some "myth" busting and it was hard not to at least reluctantly agree that Pottsville didn't have a claim like you said. I definitely respect O'Brien - he didn't want a title that wasn't won on the field and it is disappointing that the NFL couldn't reach the nice compromise of co-champions. That's why I say take it away from the Cardinals too - that would have the added benefit of making people wonder what the heck happened and more people in theory would learn about the Maroons......

Mike, excellent point - I hadn't recalled that element.

Grange is all through this story! One theory Pottsville always put forward was that the games that the Cardinals added at the end of the season were at the request of NFL President Joe Car so they would have a better record than the Maroons and he had a better argument against Pottsville. In reality it appears that adding these games was an attempt by Chris O'Brien to be able to woo the Grange-led Bears into playing another game that would generate lots of $$$$. He mistakenly didn't take a portion of the gate receipts the first time the Bears and Cards played and didn't see the kind of dollars lots of visiting teams saw when playing the Bears late that season.

Unfortunately for the Cards, Grange got hurt and the Cards hope of playing the Bears in a lucrative game never materialized.

Great - thanks Jeff - glad you replied - I've been reading a lot about the 20s recently - lots of great defunct teams and teams that kind of survived (new name/location) from that decade - as my icon shows my favorite one is from the next decade.

I started out with just picking up some HOF rookies and reading about NFL history, and that somehow evolved into working on the 35 Chicle set which I really love, but doesn't keep me that busy with only a few cards left to go and so few mid-grade auctions recently. I'm not sure where I'll go next collecting-wise - often my interests and budget don't match up that well :)

I agree with the budget statement, John. That is why I try to stay as focused on the 1920's as possible. If I stray then I am in trouble. I have a few Spartans items, I will post a few.

Are you linking to a photo on a site or using the attachment (paperclip icon) to upload? There are pretty strict limits on the size of images you upload as an attachment. That might be why its not working and why I moved all of my stuff to an image hosting site.

Jeff, Thanks for trying on the letter. I could never upload images on the CU board because of size limits - I found a hosting site I liked because it didn't require me to enter a ton of personal account information, but I can't recall which one I used.

You posted other images though - I think the size limits are much more generous here - may have just been a glitch.

What kind of letter was it? I recall the Spartans (or maybe it was the Tanks) did recruiting by writing letters to college players....

That is exactly what the letter is. I have one from '30 and one from '31. Came in a scrapbook lot I purchased a few years back. The scrap book also had a signed player contract for the 1931 Cleveland Indians, which as you know were a one year team. Also a letter, both are signed by Jerry Corocran THAT JErry Corcoran of the Pottsville fame who answered the phone and gave permission to Dr. Striegel to play the ND game.
