Tough week for former Red Sox - Frank Malzone passed away today
 

I got the chance to get to know him two years ago at Red Sox Fantasy Camp, including a couple of dinners with him. He was such a nice man and had great stories, and was remarkably generous to the camp attendees with his coaching and time.

So it was especially sad for me to see this news today....

Sad news indeed. RIP, Frank.

Sad News. Frank was my Dad's hero. Got several autos from him over the years and it was always a great experience. He was a really nice guy.

That is sad news.He was really good signing TTM.I asked him what his favorite all star game memory was.He answered hitting a home run off of Don Drysdale.

RIP Frank Malzone. When I lived in Boston I had the pleasure of meeting Mr.Malzone on a few occasions and he was a true gentleman! Condolences to his family! God Bless!

Like Ken Boyer, Frank was an outstanding offensive and defensive third baseman who doesn't get the credit he deserves. He won the first three Gold Gloves in the American League before Brooks Robinson came along, and he was a very good hitter with power who was tough to strike out. I'm always surprised when I see his card in a pile of commons. Rest in peace, Frank ...

I still feel that way about a lot of decent players who just never really had that large hobby impact. Frank was a 6X AS which seems pretty significant, but to take that a step further, how do you feel about Charlie Hayes? Hayes is baseball-reference's #1 comparison to Malozne. I'm sure nobody cares to find or place old Charlie in the common bin. Maybe not the best comparison, but statistically, they were close.

That Malzone would have been a sweet find for 10 year old me when I was unknowledgeable about general 1950s players and was looking for better players by reading card backs and stats, from the $2-3 1950s box at Golden Age Collectibles in the 80s.
