Searching for Lost Jimmy Claxton Film.... Any Suggestions?
I am looking for film footage of a Jimmy Claxton pitched game. The game was between the Shasta Limiteds and Halton Didier Clotheirs at San Leandro ballpark, and filmed by the Tribune Kinema Weekly on June 29, 1919. The pitching matchup featured Jimmy Claxton, who had struck out 23 the previous Sunday versus St. Dominicks, and Johhny Gillespie, who played a couple years in the Majors. Others on the Shasta Limiteds roster included Carlisle Perry, Goldie Davis, Eddie Jackson, and Chet Bost to name a few.
The Oakland Tribune reported (6-26-1919); "The game is being so much talked about around town that moving pictures of it are to be taken for the Tribune Kinema Weekly." The Kinema Weekly seems to be associated with the Kinema Theatre in Oakland which operated ca. 1917-1922. Needless to say this is very early footage of an African American baseball game, and perhaps the earliest known between white and black baseball teams. I am having a hard time tracking down the footage, and am seeking advice about California film archives, and where to search, any suggestions are appreciated. The film was probably very similar to this footage from 1918 Oakland Oaks vs. San Francisco Seals: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zu-f6xSFxFU |
