Lew Lipset selling his N172 James McDonald

Got an email from Lew today with his new for sale page and he is selling his N172 James McDonald, Sacramento SGC 86. $600,000! Wish I had the scratch.

Great card, strong price.

I never understood the appeal of scarcity for its own sake.

Can someone please PM me Lew's email address? The links on the site don't work. (Note: I will not be buying his Old McDonald.)

Thanks.

I'm sure there are some cards in your price range that you can overpay for.

Everyone pay attention: that was snark. And quite well done, too.

Link to Lew's page

I hope he produces the bio, as mentioned before. I'd put Lew as second only to Burdick in terms of impact to the hobby.

So $600,000 is definitely too much for one of these? I believe it's the only one known.

bcornell 11-13-2015 07:38 PM

The card's been on his page for a while. It's still there.

Sellers can ask any price they want. Some of them think this is a big hobby with lots of whales, despite all evidence to the contrary.

The whales be buying Mantles, not James McDonalds.

Depends. Several PCL N172s are one-of-a kind and presumably go for around $100,000 or a bit more. There is a price multiplier effect for higher grades but it loses its effect somewhat when the lower grade 1-of-1s are boosted based on their own rarity.

Price multipliers apply better to registry cards. I have an SGC 70 unique card of O'Day Sacramento. First $200K bid takes it. Do I hear $199K? If the card goes to auction the market will determine what it is worth.
