Connection between Western Playground and Mono Cigarettes images?

2 Attachment(s)
Hi all,

I just picked up my first Western Playground card, and I was looking at the images for the 1911 Western Playground set today on Old Cardboard, and noticed that the image for Chet Chadbourne is the same as the one used for the T217 Mono Cigarettes set. I don't see any other images that are the same between the two sets, but it got me wondering where the images came from for the two sets. At least with the Portland players, it seems to me that there is a similarity in style and poses (like they all came from the same photo shoot). Since I am always looking for any reason to start a discussion on my favorite PCL sets, I thought I would open up this thread and see if anyone knows of any connections between the two issues. And please, post any cool images you have on these sets. By the way, neither of these images are mine, I got them off the net.

Good catch, Ed. There are a few others (Schmidt, O'Rourke) where the cards from both sets used the same image. I doubt anyone had noticed this before.

But... Peckinpaugh (Portland) doesn't use the same image. So, it was likely a case where the issuers had choices between photos: sometimes they picked the same one, sometimes not.

I couldn't find a T217 image for O'Rourke, and having been searching alphabetically, that was where I stopped (not finding anything up to that point), so I never got to Schmidt. Cool to see there are two others. Any image for the O'Rourke? It is pretty interesting that there is not much information on either set, but they must have originated with the same photographer (at least for some teams). With some of the other PCL sets, it is pretty obvious that Gilmartin did the photography for the Seals team (Obak, Zeenut, and I suspect Bishop), and it is mostly accepted that Cardinet put out the 1913 Oakland team issue, so it is fun to see this connection between another of my two favorite sets. Big Eater, anyone?

Actually, I can't find an image of a T217 O'Rourke, although I *think* it's the same one. Somebody will be able to help. The OC guys have a gallery of the Playgrounds.

Schmidt uses the same image, which is an outdoor shot.

Metzger doesn't. Like all of the LA players in T217, his is a studio photo.
