Wright Old Judges

Harry Wright is a scarce Old Judge card. Wright has three different poses, one extremely rare, and two just scarce. In an unusual situation, three examples of his most common pose are currently showing up in auctions--a PSA 5 in REA and a PSA 8 and 4 in the upcoming Heritage auction. All three of these cards have light photos. Looking at these three cards one might assume that this pose only comes with light images. This is not the case (see Old Judge book image); these cards may technically be graded correctly, but their grades, in my opinion, in no way correlates with their desireability. Three examples of why TPG criteria for grading Old Judges need to be changed.

+1, a faint image with beautiful corners is just a faint image

The image should be the first aspect of an old judge considered by a grading company in my opinion. Sharp corners and nice borders don't really mean anything to me if the image is faint.

Yeah, slabbing OJ's is sort of unnecessary. Most, if not all, only look at the photo.

Another classic example of TPG for an old judge

Guess this is trimmed? With this image, I don't care...

This thread back in March was my contribution to this discussion:

http://www.net54baseball.com/showthread.php?t=203387

prompted by my getting this AUTH-graded beauty:

And Jay, I know we talked about this a bit at the National, and you said that you had talked to somebody at SGC (I think) who acknowledged that they need to come up with better grading criteria for OJs, because the market is rejecting their current standards -- the price a graded OJ goes for has only a very loose correlation with its technical grade, with photo quality being much more important. I hope they do get their act together, though it doesn't matter much to me, since the bulk of my OJs are raw.

Hi Dave! The vast majority of my Old Judges are also raw. However, I would like to see the TPGs come up with a relevant grading system for Old Judges so that new collectors have an easier time valuing the slabbed cards they come across,

Something similar to how Beckett grades cards would work perfect. Giving sub-grades and an overall grade is probably the best solution. All that needs to be added is an Image category and we are ready to go.
