A 107 year old record HAS BEEN BROKEN
Not that many would care unless you're a White Sox fan but..........
Chris Sale is chasing "Big Ed" Walsh's single season strikeout record, that he set in 1908 of 269. Sale entered the game with 259 and has 8k's as we speak. Only 3 more to go. I'm usually not happy about old record being broken but when you think of the ball they use today compared to when Big Ed used it it is a drastic difference. I'll bypass that he was allowed the spitball as it was "legal" so NO biased opinion there. Sale is also facing juicers as well. |
a good year for breaking records in Chicago. Kris Bryant broke Billy Williams's home run and RBI records ealier this rear for Cub home runs by a rookie set in 1961. Darn record only held for 54 years. One of the big reasons that the Cubbies will be a lock for the post seasen. Finally something to cheer about for the North Siders

Impressive record for Sale. And Big Ed still will have the record for a right handed Sox pitcher.

And how on earth you got that ball :eek::eek: |
Sale fell short.
currently sits on 267 k's 2 will tie Walsh 3 will surpass his single season Sox record He should get 1 more start so I would imagine 3 k's will be pretty easy for him. |

I am shocked that any strike out records exist from that long ago. 100 years ago, everyone was a contact hitter and strikeouts were low. The last 50+ years, players have been chasing HRs and they don't care about Ks.

Fergie Jenkins is the closest modern pitcher to the Cubs record. |
The top 7 are all from the 19th century.

As a Braves' fan, 2014 shows the reality of the effect of too many strikeouts: The only way that team could score at all was over the fence - no wonder they had to clear house. I think (and hope) that strikeouts will soon, once again, become something to be avoided. And I hope that pull hitters again learn to hit to the opposite field instead of always hitting into the shifts - the very notion of 'outlawing' shifts is about the most ridiculous thing I ever heard of. |

When I saw this thread title, I naturally assumed that someone thought the Cubs were going to win the World Series this year. ;):D:D

I feel Big Ed Walsh is such an underrated (and undervalued) player. He's definitely one of my favorite portraits in the T206 set. Let's see your Walshs.
