My N162 King Kelly - made from cut commons

I'm doing the best I can to put those junk wax commons to good use:

Great work!

Louieman 09-16-2015 03:35 PM

Wow! I love it

Jay Wolt 09-16-2015 03:43 PM

Tim, you're pieces are fantastic. How large is the Kelly?

PolarBear 09-16-2015 03:54 PM

That's impressive work. I must say though that I'd be even more impressed if you made it entirely from N162 cards.

+1 very impressive work. To somewhat steal Don's idea a T206 Wagner made out of beater T206 cards would be beyond amazing.

Sweet Kelly!

Love it! You're work reminds me of the large Babe Ruth montage I once saw (not sure if it's still there) at the ESPN Zone in Times Square. It was made entirely of baseball cards...

TimCarrollArt 09-16-2015 04:26 PM

Thanks, everyone!

Thank you, Jay. I'm not at home right now, but the dimensions are in the neighborhood of 19.5" x 30.5" - give or take a quarter inch.

Insanity! I love it.

I've read through several of the T206 threads on here. I believe someone would send a hit squad if they knew my scissors were near something like that.:)

Add me to the list of those that are impressed. Interesting art work. I only wish Big Dan Brouthers' N162 was as pretty as Anson & Kelly. Those two cards are in a class of their own.

Tim, great work as always. What material do you use as a canvas? Cloth, wood, plastic or...?

Love the work you do and honestly, anything that takes some cards from that era out of circulation is a good thing. You do it the best way though. Hope you're busy for many years!

I agree....and I I may add Keefe to my future workload just to have one of the N162's on my own wall.

Thank you! I use a sturdy foam board as my canvas. I never really have considered using any other canvas. The first one I made 6-7 years ago was made on the foam board. I realized immediately that once I affixed the cards to it - the only way they were coming off is if I used a blade to pry and scrape. I liked how durable it was, so I have never changed.

Thank you! I hope so as well - it is fun meeting so many people in the hobby (in person and online), as well as hearing some of the stories that are being shared of why a particular card is so important to them.

wow, that's really impressive.

clydepepper 09-18-2015 11:23 AM

Awesome, Tim !

I hope you rest your eyes enough.

I'd love to see one based on 1964 Topps #136- Koufax Strikes Out 15

-that was the first ML game I ever saw.

and 1933 Goudey #144 - the best Babe card (IMO)
.

Thank you! I could always use extra rest. I teach during the day, so the artwork comes at night and on weekends/holidays. What a first MLB game....no wonder you are still involved with the game's history after all these years! The first game I ever watched - in any capacity - was the 1988 World Series Game 1. We only had 3 TV channels (antenna), and a storm had knocked 2 of them out. I was left to watch a sport I cared nothing about. Then Gibson changed my life. I had chills and couldn't explain them. I spent the next couple of years watching trying to get that feeling again, and then Puckett delivered it to me in '91.

Oh, and that Babe card is awesome - I'm sure I'll get to it someday soon. The next piece off the table (almost certainly in the next 3-4 weeks) is actually the 1933 green back Goudey Ruth.;)

Thank you, Josh. I started this just as a "I wonder what would happen if...." project back in March, 2009. This Kelly marked the 80th piece I have created since that time. 49 of those pieces are created from cut sports cards - the other 31 are from other materials relative to the subject matter. Fortunately, the reception to the work has been great, and I own just 6 of those 80. I still teach elementary math, but I take much pride in this being my "other" career.

Mr Kelly joining Mr Anson. Tim's work is absolutely amazing. I recommend that if you ever have the opportunity to acquire one of his pieces, don't think twice.
