Tris Speaker Rookie?
 

I have been looking to pick up a Tris Speaker rookie for my Boston PC. Can someone help me with what would be considered his rookie?

Novelty Cutlery postcard if you want to be a purist otherwise t206.

I've always heard that the 1909-1911 T206 card is considered his "Rookie Card"

Novelty Cutlery is 1910.

Is that a recent discovery?

Personally, I like the Colgan's Chips and E90-1 Speakers as rookie cards.

Thanks Kevin. I am surprised whoever originally catalogued this was off by several years. I bet the ones we saw in auction sold for much more because of the 07 designation as well.

Mainstream rookie is T206. Although none are known to exist (at least that I'm aware), there should be a 1908 Carl Horner Cabinet of Speaker.

I was actually thinking of the '08-09 Rose Co. PC (I've never seen one), but now I'm curious about the date of the Carl Horner Cabinet. Is that an '09 issue predominantly? I've seen the Horners listed from 1905-1910...those dates would certainly put it in the running as a Speaker "rookie".

If a Rose postcard of Speaker does exist, he would certainly be part of the "no team" series that was issued in 1909.

Not so...I bought (and own) the 2012 REA example linked above. And I was well aware of the research putting the date in question at the time I bid. As you know, with pre-war baseball lots of collectors don't care about rookie card designations. There is much more emphasis on scarcity and attractiveness of the card. The one I bought has to be one of the nicest ones out there, and I would pay the same price again any day.

Thanks for all the responses. I am a fan of the American Caramel but will probably go with T206 when I decide to pull the trigger. The others I think will be out of my price point.

The images for Horner cabinets were taken over a number of years. Most that we see are from the 1900 - 1910 era, but he was certainly active before and after as well.

While the date that the image was originally taken can sometimes be discerned by the players' uniforms, I would assume that Horner continued to print and distribute his cabinets for many years after the initial image was taken.
