Cool bat! I was clueless on this and wondered if this was Clemente's brother or something? But did some research and found:
http://www.post-gazette.com/sports/p...s/201208030220 "Momen Clemente was his nickname as a child," Mr. Scheier said. "Apparently, when he was a child, he was often deep in thought and when someone would call him, he would say 'Momentito,' which meant 'Hold on a second.' And that was how he got that nickname." Clemente didn't start having his bats stamped "Roberto Clemente" until the 1961 season. "This is one of the final 'Momen Clemente' bats, which do carry a premium," Mr. Scheier said. |
The real Momen story
I will let the auction house authors comments speak for themselves. The real story of how Clemente got the nickname was he would play baseball or practice his skills any spare time he had. When his mother would ask him to come in for dinner or to help with chores - he would respond "momentito" - "just a minute" - as he never wanted to stop playing. Momentito was shortened to Momen and a nickname was born. The "momen" signature was used on Clemente bats from 1955-1960. His 1960 world series bat was the last one to use the "momen" signature. The bats are incredibly rare and highly sought after.
