Don Mattingly
Hi-
I have been collecting Don Mattingly cards since the mid 1980s. I have about 230 different cards issued during his playing days but I have not scanned them yet. Please post you Mattingly cards. I prefer to see ones issued during his career but any will do. I would really like to see more difficult cards as well as minor league issues. I will try to start scanning some of mine soon. Alan |

I have many Mattingly cards, but this "homemade" business card I got in 1986 from the card shop mentioned on the back has always stuck out to me because it came from the first card shop I had ever visited. A few years before when I still lived in the area I would frequent this shop, however it was on my last return visit there (in '86) they handed this Mattingly and a Roger Clemens card (which was the #2 card in the series) out to customers. It appears this shop may still there....maybe there are more of these Mattingly's out there.

I remember back in the early/mid 90s Don Mattingly was always included in every insert set, but his cards were never valuble. The Griffeys and Thomas's were the ones that had value. You'd pull an insert and get mad because it's Mattingly.
Anyways, it seems the tide has turned. Now Don Mattingly cards sometimes can be the most valuable card of a set. Retribution for Mattingly. http://i.imgur.com/QBSATZ8.png I bought a box of 1987 topps on a whim a few weeks ago, and this is one of cards I got. There is no 'TM' under the American League logo, so according to Beckett, this card is more valuable than the one with a 'TM'. |
That Mattingly business card is awesome.

Thanks everyone! I really appreciate seeing all of these cards. I agree the business card is really cool, but there are several cards in this thread I have never seen. I will try to scan some of my cards this weekend. Please post more examples.

My personal favorite Donnie of all time-- there's something about how that Tiffany gloss and deep, rich color hits the eye. The shine of his helmet in the inset photo, the purple of the team letters, the clarity of the ground by his cleats, the pinstripes, how he's not wearing the '23' that would become a retired number, the horizontal bands of green and blue in the card background, I just love it.

I love this thread...I got into baseball in 1985-86 with those Yankee teams. Actually Winfield was my favorite, but getting into cards back then, Mattingly was GOLD!
Love the odd-balls in this thread...really makes me think about starting a player collection! |
Great thread! I'm a Donnie Baseball player collector on the modern side of the playground. Here are a couple of my favorite oddballs, and some other stuff I dig!

Awesome cards everyone! I would love to see more.
Here are a couple of mine. The black and white one is a fake minor league card and the color one is legitimate (I think). Any other minor league cards for Mattingly? Alan |

Where did these cards come from? Where they a magazine insert? Z |
Mattingly minor league
Aelefson - the color card is legit. It was prt of a team set issued by a local police department. There is also a 1982 TCMA Columbus Clippers card of Mattingly. In 1981, the Nashville sounds and Arby's issued a set of cards and Mattingly can be found twice within the set - once as a dedicated card and once as part of a team picture.
