The mystique of the T206 set's 350/460 series.....Show us your cards
There are 22 regular issue T-brand backs printed on the T206 subjects in the 350/460 Series. Also, there are the Sweet Cap 460, Factory #30 "scraps" (not issued).
460-type backs http://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan7...series25xx.jpg http://i603.photobucket.com/albums/t...0factory42.jpghttp://i1255.photobucket.com/albums/...psc8c09003.jpg . http://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan7...460Fac30bx.jpg . http://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan7...x460Fac30x.jpg .......................... Factory #42 ........................ 350-type backs http://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan7...ldDRUMx25b.jpghttp://i1255.photobucket.com/albums/...psee0acdf3.jpg Circa Spring/Summer of 1910, American Lithographic (ALC) printed their last group (66 subjects) of their SOVEREIGN 350 press runs. ALC printed the backs of these cards with a pale color of green ink (apple green). Earlier press runs of SOVEREIGN 350 cards (140 subjects) were printed with a darker color of green ink. Anyhow, 63 of the 66 subjects printed with the apple green backs were subsequently printed with 460 series backs. The Joe Doyle, Simon Nicholls, and Bob Rhoades cards from this original group of 66 were not printed with 460 series backs, since their Major League careers had ended prior to the 460 series press runs. Most T206 collectors are very knowledgeable on the various front/back permutations of this set. However, these T206's that were printed with both 350 series backs and 460 series backs can be quite complicated. Especially the Six Super-Prints which can be found with as many as 24 different backs. It is always fun to review 350/460 series. And, an additional intent of this thread is to inform T206 collectors who have just started working on their T206 adventure. Show us your 350/460 series T206 cards. Pictures are always worth at least 1000 words. Especially, your cards with the tougher backs. Perhaps then we'll discover some new front/back combos. There still remains quite a number of unconfirmed front/back combos in the 350/460 series. TED Z . |

In the SOVEREIGN press runs, American Lithographic printed the Six Super-Prints first with the SOVEREIGN 350 backs. Then re-printed these same
Six Super-Prints with the SOVEREIGN 460 backs. The mystique of the T206 set's 350/460 series....Show us your cards
Illustrated here are the 66 subjects that American Lithographic selected to continue into the 460 series. My theory is simple....this group of cards were printed on the last sheets of the original
350 series cards. With the exception of the 6 super-prints, notice that all the images are action poses (which is typical of the design in the latter phases of each T206 series). v................................................. ....... The more of these that you have with tougher backs, the better. Perhaps then we will discover some new front/back combos. My favorite Jennings card in the 350/460 series is this "one hand" version. It can be found with the American Beauty 460 (AB 460) back.
This is a very tough F/B combo to find....I think only 4 are known. http://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan7...ngsHand50x.jpg . http://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan7...sHand50xbx.jpg On the other hands (pun), Jennings "two hands" version is easier to find with an AB 460 back. This pose was also printed with the AB 350 (no frame) back. http://i603.photobucket.com/albums/t...ngs2hds50x.jpghttp://i603.photobucket.com/albums/t...etts460bks.jpg TED Z . |

Forgive my lack of knowledge, but I'm trying! I thought that Sovereign 460 was in the middle of the pack on the "Rarity" scale. What makes the Matty rare??? |
Greg Z
Great question.
There are a total of 52 different subjects printed with the SOVEREIGN 460 backs. And, there are 3 levels of "scarcity" as follows...... 1..Most rare are these 6 super-prints which are much more difficult to find with SOVEREIGN 460 back than the 46 subjects in the 460-only series. http://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan7...rprints50x.jpg 2..Most available are these 12 subjects referred to as the "Exclusive 12" which are easier to find from the group of 46 subjects. http://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan7...460x42x25x.jpg http://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan7...460x42x25x.jpg 3..Moderately available are the remaining 34 subjects in the 460-only series. The info regarding the SOVEREIGN 460 ranking that you are citing is too general, as it does not account for these 3 distinct differences. I hope this clarifies things for you. TED Z . |

Hey Johnny V
Here's another one of those Sweet Cap backs that American Litho. (ALC) mis-printed the overprint.
I love this kind of stuff. For it reveals to us "T206 dudes" that ALC indeed had 350/460 series Sweet Caporal 460 Factory #30 cards printed to go. But, the anticipated transfer of Sweet Caporal cigarette production to the Liggett & Myers plant (Durham, NC, Factory #42) due to ATC's divestiture in 1911 changed the course of events. http://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan7...0xWilletts.jpg.http://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan7...illetts75b.jpg TED Z . |

C'mon Ted, that's not a real back on that Cobb.
Pete fooled me with some Pirate backs last year. I'm not falling for that again. :D |
Hey Sean
I am simply trying to make a point with that picture. Some years ago I read where Cobb considered that playing Baseball was like "War".
And as we know from American Litho (ALC) ledger documents that the T206 UZIT cards and T80 UZIT cards were printed simultaneously. Furthermore, a T206 UZIT and a T80 UZIT were inserted in the same Cigarette pack (circa Feb 1911). Given all this, what is the probability that an ALC printer accidently printed the Military Series (UZIT) backs on T206's ? ? I would say that my far-fetched Cobb card....while it appears very unusual....is not really that impossible. Some of the nicer T80 cards in my collection wit UZIT or LENOX backs. http://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan7...ubjects25x.jpg Looking forward to seeing you at the National in a few weeks. TED Z . |
I'll find your table. :)
