Player Collections of T206 ??
I was reading up on SABR about Heine Zimmerman and for some reason it occurred to me ....... Could some of the players back then actually collected T206s ???
I don't think it's all that far-fetched to think about. Smoking back then was nothing like it is now. It wasn't looked down upon unless you were a woman. Perhaps players tried to get their own cards ??? Does anyone know of or have heard anything about players actually collecting T206s ?? Sorry if this is a repeat of an earlier thread. I can't imagine there wasn't a single player that didn't have in some form a collection of T206s. |
I don't know if this counts, but from an old thread, here's Harry Caray with Gabby Street.

I'm sure it counts for something !!! One of them looks like Carey must have been collecting them !!! Imagine that. You could potentially be owning a T206 by Carey or Street.
This is what I'm getting at !!! Thanks for posting this !!! I see a couple HOFers no Wagner ahhaha. |
Dunn
Notice how Dunn is placed as a Horizontal!!
Oops, is that even Dunn?? Which card is that? |

My guess is that is Dunn. |
Not the right era, but Joe Garagiola had quite a T206 collection at one time
Don't know if it is still in his possession or not, but there was an article in Vintage and Classic Baseball Collector I believe, where he talked about spreading them out, and just looking at them for hours.

Still curious about of that era though. |

I won't out them here because some of them don't want to make a big deal about it publicly, but several current guys are very much into it. |

I have a Mayo Cut Plug that was once owned by Casey Stengel. I don't know how many other cards he may have collected, but enough that they put from the Casey Stengel collection on the flip.

This is a great interview with KO and Pat Neshek talking cards:

I remember hearing about that further proof on what a moron Lacky is. I never liked him on LA and hated him even worse on Boston. Then he had to go to St. Louis (I like them for National League team). A real no brainer trade for Pat there lol. |

I remember hearing that Joe Nossek (an outfielder for the Twins in the 1960s) collected cards of himself. I remember because when I collected the 1965 Topps set I got 597 of 598 cards in PSA 9. His was the card I could never find. It took me five years, but I did finally find one. |
Josh--
Back in 2009 I bought a T206 collection of 130-plus cards that were bought & collected back in the day by a Minor Lg pitcher named Roy Mellinger.
You might be interested in this thread I posted at the time telling a little bit about them. http://www.net54baseball.com/showthr...ight=Mellinger |
I have a T206 Matty that is signed on the back by J Dugan. Could be his hand writing and he was in his teens when the set was produced.
Tom C Edit: I also read an article where Dugan gave away a Babe Ruth signed ball to a current player in the 1970's.....so he may have been a collector. |
Dave "Boo" Ferriss once had "272 tobacco cards..."
While not a player of the T206 period, 1945-50 Red Sox pitcher David "Boo" Ferriss once had a pretty nice collection, according to his 1990 letter to T.C. Card Co.: http://www.ebay.com/itm/3-28-90-DAVE...-/370817751830
Boston's best pitcher of 1945-46 listed the following: 16 T205 - gold border 157 T206 - white border 40 E90-1 caramels 23 E95 - of a 25 set [!] 36 T210 Southern League - black & white with red border 7 silks, 5 in good condition ...and more comments |

These T206's belonged to Zach Wheat and came out of his scrapbook. The E120 cards came from the same scrapbook.

Not directly on point, but I love that Paddy Livingston had "reprints" of his T206 card made up -- with Piedmont backs and everything! -- to distribute to enterprising through-the-mail autograph seekers. I grab these whenever I can find them...
