1971. Year of my birth, good mix of action and posed shots, not into the extra throwin cards yet of the next few years (ie when they were kids etc), photo on the back.
Some nice sets in the 70's but this one is tops for me.

'71 topps has always been my favorite set of the '70's.The Ryan and Munson cards in that set are 2 of my favorite card.

For a variety of reasons I have always liked the 1972 Topps set way above all the other sets of the 70,s. Being a Mets fan I really like the IA cards but to this day always wondered why 2 of the better teams with plenty of Hofers the Cardinals with Torre, Gibson, Brock and the Orioles with the Robinsons, Palmer did not have any IA cards. Even the Royals, Phillies and Padres who were bad teams without stars had some IA cards.

The 77 design is best for me. This is a little tougher than other decades, because I like the 76 set almost equally.

I like the team name across the top and this set has a decent number of action shots. The AS banners add to the cards, as do the trophies. I also like that it has some (but not too many) playoff cards and the TBC subset and continues the multiplayer rookie cards, which I have always liked as well.

The Garvey card is still probably my favorite of his cards as well as the set itself and others like Staub, Seaver, Tanana, Fidrych and Rose are just cool cards.

1975

Since you asked about the best of the '70, I'll go with 1975 "today". If you ask me tomorrow it may be the 1971 set since I go back and forth on which I like better. Also, again, I like them all, but these are my favs from the '70's.

Donne...it's got 1975 in italics?!? :D

Lol! It's funny how that works.

For me, '71 is a nightmare due to its black borders, and anything beyond 1973 belongs in a separate category because of its lack of series distribution, so I am happily hitting the '72 button...

Agree with Jolly, the 71 set just looks crummy unless in really nice shape, then you have to worry about if the card was "doctored" with a black pen, etc... Overall some really nice sets from this decade. 1970 has some great backs, easy to read and very colorful, cartoon, etc. 1972 is a huge set, but a classic that has a colorful and unique look. I don't love the darker backs that are found on the 71, 74, 76, & 79 sets. Harder to read. Finally, I know it's dopy, but I fell that 74 and 79 are missing something without the rookie all star trophy cards. When I was in like sixth grade, I thought those were the coolest cards in the world. I think I traded a Mattingly Rookie for the 1966 Tony Perez and I was happy for like 7 weeks.

1975 is the easy choice for me. Those color combos are so disco, you've got a great selection of Hall of Famers, two trophy bucks and even a couple other "minor" RCs.

These things just scream 70s in every way.

71 by far, followed by 72. just don't see the reasoning behind the 75s, but to each their own...

That's funny because I LOVE the 75s. The 72s might be my least favorite of the decade. Like you said - to each their own!

Love 1975s the most. Great rookies, the MVP cards and two Aarons make this a keeper. On top of this, the Mini set keeps people collecting.
I believe I could tell you who any player is in this set without seeing the name.

There were a few really great sets in the early to mid 1970s.
1972 is tough to complete with the high numbers and is loaded with stars and great extras.
1971 is tough to find in nice shape and the black borders on it are nice.
1973 in my opinion has some of the best action shots and was the year I started collecting. I love that set more than the others, but I don't think its the best set.

Thanks for the feedback and votes so far... looks like it is coming down to 1971 and 1975. For some reason I though '72 would take the prize.

I'm voting for 1971.
