Roger Bresnahan, a view

3 Attachment(s)
Roger Bresnahan's birthday is tomorrow, June 11. Elected to the hall 1945. Shown 3 items from his estate. Would love to see any other items related to him.
Items are 2 photos and one tin type(interesting view looks like outside a ballpark).

Three beautiful images, but I am especially interested in the tintype, as it is incredibly late for that photo medium. Since Bresnahan was born in 1879, it's reasonable to assume it is post 1900. That's very unusual.

Here is a RPPC of Bresnahan taken during his only postseason appearance. This photo of battery-mates Bresnahan and Mathewson was taken on October 9, before the first game of the 1905 World Series. Bresnahan would go on to catch a Mathewson shutout that day, the first of three that Matty threw in that Series.

Horner photo circa 1904

Sold in a group of Horner photos by Mastro in 2007. This same photo was later used for his Ramly card, but with the "New York" removed from the uniform.

(1) The first image is a Bregstone postcard from (judging by the socks) 1910 or 1911.

(2) The next is a postcard showing members of the St. Louis Cardinals following the July 11, 1911 derailment of a train on which they were traveling. They assisted in the rescue. A stamp on the front identifies the incident. Standing: team secretary Herman Seekamp (unverified); Wally Smith; Ivy Wingo; Jack Bliss; Grover Lowdermilk; Bob Harmon; Ed Konetchy; Rebel Oakes. Seated: Arnold Hauser; Rube Ellis; Lee Magee; Steve Evans; Roger Bresnahan.

(3) There was no 1904 World Series. Disputes on several levels led the National League champion New York Giants, pictured on this 1904 postcard, to decline to play the American League champion Boston Americans. The postcard shows (top row) Luther Taylor, Mike Donlin, Billy Gilbert, Bill Dahlen, Frank Bowerman (top row); (middle row) Hooks Wiltse, Jack Dunn, John McGraw, Dan McGann, Claude Elliot; (bottom row) Red Ames, George Browne, Roger Bresnahan, Joe McGinnity, Jack Warner, Sam Mertes. McGraw, Bresnahan, and McGinnity are in the Hall of Fame. Dunn was the first person to sign Babe Ruth to a professional contract in 1914 as skipper of the Baltimore Orioles.

Heritage's February auction had a whole slew of things from Roger Bresnahan's estate. I won this panorama photo of a Giants-Pirates game at the Polo Grounds in May of 1905. The accompanying LOA stated that it belonged to Bresnahan and it is he crouched behind home plate taking Iron Man McGinnity's pitches. This sucker is nearly four feet wide - the detail is amazing. You don't see tall ships in the outfield much anymore.
A choir mate of my wife is a top-notch conservator. She works in the archives of the Land Registry here in Victoria. The work she has done on old maps that demarcated this city two centuries ago just blows the mind of this old land surveyor. I was stoked when she said she would knock my photo into shape - repair the tears, infill the chips and, main thing, remove the linen backing which forces the photo into a tight roll. She's almost done with this painstaking work. After that I'll get a frame on it and then up she goes on the library wall of this old Giant fan.

This jpeg came from the Heritage site. It is huge. I hope Net 54's "posting mechanism" will accommodate it.

just FYI

the tintype is clearly a shot taken in a studio with some form of backdrop and not at a ballpark - it would be all about whomever is in the photograph.

Great photo of the Polo Grounds.
Guess it would have been good to be in the hat business circa the early 20th.

Cool image David...I spent a few minutes scanning the crowd to see if I could find a single fellow without a hat, with no luck. I guess in 1905 one might have been shamed out of the ballpark if they arrived bareheaded.

Here is one of my favorite Bresnahan poses; the Novelty Cutlery postcard.
This is one of the earliest, if not the earliest, depiction of a a catcher's shin guards on a card. Bresnahan debuted them on opening day of 1907.

Lots of really great Bressy stuff in this thread. Kudos to our members with some great stuff....... but that panorama, with all of that detail and everything going on, is spectacular.

Glad you folks appreciate the photo. Might be several more weeks before Jean T, our conservator friend, finishes her work and the framer theirs. Am anxious to see the finished product. I should mention that Jean said there was a certain risk involved in the process of removing the linen backing and I could end up with shredded wheat but so far so good. Will post some pikkies when it is up on the wall.

Good luck David!

That piece really lets you know what it felt like to actually be at that game.

David.
Agreed. Beautiful piece. Would love to see the final outcome.

Kawika 09-07-2015 09:06 PM

At long last the Polo Grounds panorama photo is a done deal. The conservation work was successfully completed about a month ago and the framer finished with it on Saturday. I am thrilled with the results.

Talk about late to the party. But, what the heck. It's been a while since I posted a picture from my collection. This is one of my favorite portraits in the T206 set, and in really nice condition, too.

You can download a fairly hi-res version of David's 5-20-1905 Polo Grounds photo from Library of Congress:

Thanks, Mark. And if you want to see things in even greater detail the Heritage auction description yields yet a higher-res photo. Link = http://tinyurl.com/q7284ao . Not sure if you need to log into Heritage or not to see it. It was item #80321 in the February 21, 2015 Sports auction. The LOC version appears to be a different copy of the photo going by the unique array of flaws in each version.
