Why were the cards cut down?

I guess this could also be considered a "bump".

I'm assuming so the original collector could fit them into card sleeves

I was thinking the same thing, that who ever had this cropped them down to 1957 size specs. I had read about that being done with 1952 - 1956 Topps cards, but this is the first time I have seen an entire set as such.
