" It's A (Net54) Family Affair "....in completing red HINDU Exclusive 12 sub-set
The title from Sly and the Family Stone's popular 1971 song best describes this mission. In September 2013, I acquired Doc Crandall with a red HINDU back from
Scott and Leon's auction. Since I already had the Tannehill / red HINDU card, I was motivated to try to see how quick I could complete the 12 subjects that I had designated as the " Exclusive 12 ". In a prior thread, I made a claim that these 12 guys are considerably easier to find with this very scarce red HINDU back than the other 31 confirmed red HINDU subjects. As is evident in the following timeline, in 2 months with the help from my friends on Net54, I had acquired 10 of these 12 red HINDU cards. OK, this was too easy. Certainly easier than I expected. But, I soon realized.... "It Don't Come Easy" (Ringo Starr, 1971). It took 19 months from when I first started this adventure till I finally acquired the elusive 12th red HINDU....Jimmy Sheckard. These 12 guys are the only HINDU cards that were printed in the T206 set's last Series, which comprises of 48 cards that were printed ONLY with 460-type backs. Subject .................... Nicely done Ted, stoked you got the Sheckard!!
I've only seen one other complete run of these, not an easy or cheap task. Congrats. |
Wow Ted. You did it! That is wonderful.
No need for thanks. After all, "thats what friends are forrrrrrrr" :D :) It is funny you mention Sly and the Family Stone. In 1971, my Dad was working for a collections agency, and my Mom was for working for the company that managed Sly and the Family Stone. I cannot recall the name of the management group or the venue that this took place, but after a big gig, the band decided to relive the venue of some of their equipment. It was my Dad's job to retrieve it, and after being passed around by this management group via phone he ends up meeting a young lady named Athena on the other end of the line. They got to talking, long story very, very short, they were married three months later and still are today. I always get a fuzzy feeling when I hear that band mentioned. Ringo too, because hell, he is a Beatle! :) This is a seriously great accomplishment Ted. You have done some really amazing work on these 12 subjects you refer to as the "Exclusive 12". I am not sure if you want to post them in this thread, but I would love to also see your Sovereign 460 and American Beauty 460 Exclusive 12 sets as well. The Monster can require a great deal of dedication, and it is always fun to see someone complete one of their missions. Συγχαρητήρια !!! Derek |
Congratulations Ted!! Glad to see you get to the finish line. It's been fun watching your progress!! Another reason why this is the best board on the net!! :D
|
Excellent Ted. Now lets hear more about the "Exclusive 12" Sovereign 460 subset.
|
Very cool subset. Congrats
I'd love a lesson about these 12 cards. Tougher or easier in El Principe? Tolstoi? Sovereign? Piedmont 42? |

Hey Derek and Sean......
Per your requests....the Exclusive 12 with SOVEREIGN 460 backs.
Empirical evidence indicates that these 12 guys were printed in larger quantities than the other 36 subjects that were also printed ONLY with 460-type backs. http://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan7...ereign460x.jpg http://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan7...reign460xb.jpg http://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan7...vereign460.jpg http://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan7...ereign460b.jpg Derek I will post my AMERICAN BEAUTY 460 cards of these 12 guys in a forthcoming post here. Congrats Ted.
And thanks for sharing the acquisition timeline -- that was a nice touch. Scot |
Hey Derek....here's the American Beauty's you requested....plus stories
Back in 2005, I decided to break up my T206 set to work on an all - PIEDMONT set. I was fascinated by this Zach Wheat in this set.
So in parallel with my PIEDMONT set adventure, I started working toward completing an AMERICAN BEAUTY 460 (74-card) sub-set. As a consequence of my AB 460 search, it was obvious that certain AB 460 cards (especially 12) were more available than others in the 460-only Series. And, this observation resulted in my Exclusive 12 theory. http://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan7...chWheat50x.jpghttp://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan7...hWheat50xb.jpg http://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan7...aPfeHum50x.jpg http://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan7...PfeHum50xb.jpg http://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan7...yTanMcG50x.jpg http://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan7...nMcG50xb_1.jpg At the Oaks (PA) show in 2011, I acquired this Gandil to complete my Exclusive 12 / AB 460 sub-set. Todd Marcum and I were set up at adjacent booths; and, we worked out a great trade. I traded 44 cards [including a Dahlen (Brooklyn)] to Todd, that got him to 500+ cards for his T206 set. Todd traded me this Gandil, and some miscellaneous goodies. http://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan7...ndilSGC60x.jpg.http://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan7...ndilSGC60b.jpg TED Z . |

I appreciate your kind words. I certainly wanted to give credit to the guys on this forum who were rooting for me to complete this challenge. Without their assistance, I would probably still be searching for some of these red HINDU cards. Incidentally, I have some interesting T206 news to share with you. I will call you this afternoon. Thanks......and you are right, it has been lots of fun. I really enjoy a T206 challenge. But, I must admit that I was beginning to wonder if I would find the Sheckard red HINDU. There appears to be only about 5 (or less) of them in circulation. TED Z . |

The numbers game......
For those of you that are interested in POP report #s, the following lists the POP report data regarding the 43 confirmed red HINDU cards.
Note that several UNGRADED red HINDU cards that I have (or had) are also included in these POP numbers. While I realize POP report data cannot be considered as absolute, I think it is fair to say that the POP data is representative of the relative availability of certain cards with respect to other cards. Therefore, comparing the POP report data of the "Exclusive 12" red HINDU cards with respect to the 350/460 series red HINDU cards, it is quite evident from the numbers of the Exclusive 12 guys that they were printed in greater numbers than the 350/460 series guys. POP # = PSA + SGC + Ungraded red HINDU cards in my collection 460-only series POP #.....Subject 14........Crandall (cap) 8..........Devore 14........Duffy 10........Ford 9..........Gandil 8..........Geyer 15........Hummel 10........McGraw (glove at hip) 7..........Pfeffer 7..........Sheckard (glove) 12........Tannehill (Chicago) 14........Wheat To date, 31 subjects have been confirmed with the red HINDU back in the 350/460 series. Furthermore, the following 4 subjects in the 350/460 series have yet to be confirmed with the red HINDU back. All 4 of these subjects are possible with this back.
