Athletics - Players in photo

1 Attachment(s)
I purchased a lot of three (3) photos and this was one of them. I can see an Athletics player sliding into 3rd base. Can any A's fans, or baseball fan in general, tell me who this is so I at least can document who the player is? Also, "possibly" the 3rd baseman for the other team as well?!?

Also, hopefully this is the correct area to post, if not sorry about that...

Any help would be great. Thanks in advance!

Is there any date or at least a year. By the uniform, this is Kansas City from 1955 to 1960 uniforms.

I could be way off but the sliding player reminds me of Ray Boone who played for KC in 1959.

Date/Year

There was no markings as to the date or the year that these photographs were taken. I know the photographer was Frederick A. Kraft Jr. which I believe was with the News American. The other two photos were from early 60's, but I guess that doesn't mean that this particular picture is from that time frame.

Athletics

My first thought is that he resembled Enos Slaughter, but I'm probably way off...

OK, From 1955 to 1959, only 2 AL third sackers wore number 17. Chico Carrasquel (ss, 3b) and Rudy Regaldo, who played very little for Cleveland in 55 and 56. So my bet is #17 is Chico Carrasquel, if that is the third baseman covering the bag. Carrasquel had the same physique as #17 in the photo.
He played for CWS in 1955, Clev. in 1956-57, Clev & KC in 1958 and Balt in 1959.

Good luck.

Well if it's Carrasquel on 3b it's not Boone sliding-- Boone was only on the A's in 1959 and Chico did not play either of his 2 games at 3b that season against the A's.

I looked through Marc Okonnen's baseball uniform book for clues about the fielder and the AL teams that wore socks with that pattern between '55-'60 seem to be Boston and Baltimore. I don't think he's a Red Sox since the only players to wear 17 during those years were pitchers. Maybe the wheel play was on and Carrasquel was covering?

Walt Dropo played a couple games at third for the Orioles in '59 and '60, and wore No. 17. The guy sliding looks a bit like Bob Cerv, who played for the A's in '59 and early 1960.

Chris,
I don't think that is Walt Dropo, Dropo was a lot beefier then that #17 in the photo.

Darner
I thought it may have been some sort of wheel play and it could be. #17 has his foot placed as if a force play and appears to be reaching out for the ball. So it could very well be the SS making the play.

billyb 04-14-2015 08:20 PM

I went back and took a look to see what SS wore #17 during the years of 1955 - 1960, not a one. Carrasquel was the only one. I remember Chico as a SS much more then a Third Baseman.
Another possibility is this is a spring training game, and KC may be playing a NL team.

Mark,
You KC player sliding may be Bill Tuttle.

Could it have been a Minor League Game...if so it could be a needle in a haystack.
