Any record collectors on board?
 

Been meaning to ask for a long time, but keep forgetting!

I have all of my old 45's from my HS days back in the middle-late '50's. Just like my old ball cards, I could never see getting rid of them. Got a lot of the early rock & roll days stuff, along w/ the many of the Doo Wop groups.

I also have 20 or so of those Fleetwood Sports albums (33's) that I think were issued in the '60's-'70's era.

Anyone else a record collector or still have a lot of old vinyl?

I don't collect them but still have around 100 albums form the 60's and early 70's. Haven't listened to them for years. Mainly Rolling Stones, Beatles, and Deep Purple type music.

I collect casually. I have a few sports records including my favorite Denny McClain at the organ.

I find it surprising (and disappointing!) that 45's of Elvis, Fats Domino, Jerry Lee Lewis and just about all of the old original "rockers" from the '50's aren't worth more $$.

Unless you have one that is just about mint & unplayed, or some kind of radio station promo copy, they are a hard sell at more than a couple of $$.

I guess more people bought & saved more records than they did baseball cards!

We can still look at the BB cards but how many people still have record players to listen to the albums.

I still have a record player. (And cassette, and 8 track that can do quad ) And have access to players for really old vertical cut records like Edison and Pathe, plus cylinders, either 2 or 4 minute. But not the big "opera" cylinders. Sadly most were actually opera music and my friend who's into them isn't interested in opera.


I have a bit of old vinyl, and some 78's. I wasn't really into collecting, but did pick up some stuff along the way.

The popular stuff sold a LOT of copies, and since it was entertainment loads of it got saved. I'll still pick up some at yard sales once in a while, or from thrift shops.

I buy/sell records some time when I can find older JAZZ. Some bring some good money.

Most records from big name groups/bands from almost any time in the past don't move well if at all and margins are small. Postage holds back many sells. And packaging (pizza type) boxs take up a lot of room to have on hand.

Yeah John, and for BIG bucks! I think Elvis only had 2 Sun 45 releases before he went to RCA. I have Jerry Lee, Johnny Cash & Carl Perkins on original Sun label 45's.

I have about 300 78's. Mostly jazz,big band and blues. I have 4 phonographs including a portable. I love the sound of records.

Once upon a time I collected bootlegs of The Who. Used to visit record stores anywhere and everywhere looking for rare albums, especially live stuff. Of course, eventually, when that internet thing got going, you could find it all for free. My wife still gives me grief about it.

If anyone is in search of a Who bootleg, I'm your guy. I've been trying to sell them for years.

I also inherited my grandparents Harman Kardan hi fi radio/record player console circa 1960, with the tubes and everything. Love the warm sound that thing puts out, even in mono.

I still have my original LP collection that I purchased in the 1960's and 1970's. Probably have 500-600, mostly 50's jazz and 60's classic rock. And I have a nice Technics turntable and I play them regularly. Just yesterday I listened to both sides of Miles Davis's Filles de Kilimanjaro.

Always planned to fill in some of the missing holes, but never got around to it. And records are a lot cheaper than baseball cards or coins. You can still find decent shape vintage LP's in the $15-20 range. One of these days I'm gonna do it.

I collect 45s ,have maybe a thousand.What I find is that most people tossed the covers and thus the records got scuffed up and play with noise.Fred,what is the situation with yours ? I have yet to find anyone who like me kept the 45s with their covers.Let me know.For example,yesterday stoppeed at a consignment shop and he had '50s rock from some of the biggies like Freddie Cannon,Rydell,Chubby Checker,Jan and Dean,etc.All scuffed up.Bought some ,and as usual,surface noise when played.He asked 1.00 each so only bought 10.

I kept every one of my 45's in a sleeve and I have quite a few that came in picture sleeves, which I kept. Of course the 45 EPs came in a cardboard picture sleeve and I have a few of those also.

In fact, I have 2 small bags of 45s I picked up @ yard sales & I know most are not in sleeves---I haven't even looked thru those yet & I've had 'em for over 10 yrs!

I have a bunch of early 80's hardcore stuff, some of the records sell for decent cash on ebay, I can't sell, its my youth. :)

I sold my 900+ vinyl albums for $200. I don't regret it at all. My collection probably spanned 1964-1986 (when I finally broke down and bought a CD player).

Only really cool album I have is a French pressing of the White Album on white vinyl with all of the poster inserts. Never been played.

Have the Jolson 78rpms on the original Brunswick label (thanks Dad!) Have my older sister's 45rpms (Hi Elvis P, but also Elvis C EPs) I think my vinyl collection is much how Barry describes his own...total 50s-through-70s rock and jazz from various and sundry labels, and I also have a Technics turntable. And yes, I still own Tull's Stand Up, you know, open the album cover and the band pops up! Also, the original MGM soundtrack to How The Grinch Stole Christmas,,,Hi Boris Karloff:)

I inherited my Dad's album collection when he passed. Good memories there as we listened to them together quite a bit. Most of it is classic rock.

I like the Technics Paul. It's held up well for over ten years.

Elvis Presley had 5 Sun releases, both as 45 and 78, before going to RCA Victor in late 1955.

I am a died in the wool record collector. I have my Buddy Holly / Norman Petty collection that I started in 1977. I also collect stereo 45s from 1958 - 1960. I also have some other odd and ends. My main collection are all sleeved and in plastic sleeves.

Last year my father was going to throw out his and my mother's LPs. I quickly offered to take them. He had well over 1000 of them. Even though they aren't terribly valuable I really enjoyed going through them all and the memories they invoked were priceless. I purchased a mid sixties Dual turntable and have been listening to them all in my free time.

The other day I was vacuuming and decided to play my mother's Janis Joplin records. I remembered many a Sunday morning when Janis or Areatha hit the turntable it was my cue to disappear because house work was soon to follow. Cancer took her from us twenty years ago. She was 52. I am that age now and still miss her more than I can say. However, whenever I hear Janis sing Ball and Chain or Aretha sing Day Dreaming on one of those old LPs my mother's presence fills the room. I imagine that one day Miles Davis' Bitches Brew will have the same effect on me. It's an oddly emotional experience that for some reason I only get from vinyl.

What a moving story. I can relate to the emotions music can invoke.

I had a massive collection of EP's/LP's from late 60's-90's Pacific Northwest Garage bands stored in apple crates. From The Sonics, to the Wipers, to the SubPop singles collection with Mudhoney's "Touch Me I'm Sick" & Nirvana's "Sliver/Dive" 45's. Last year, I gave them to my niece who is an amazing singer/songwriter herself, Star Anna. They're in the right hands, she could sing the phonebook and make it sound like a heartbreak trainwreck. Though it doesn't sound like it here, she's a huge fan of the Pixies, the Stooges, & Radio Birdman.

Ty, She is very talented. You must be proud. I have a 14 year old daughter who plays lead guitar in a band. Her music has filled the void created when my son gave up baseball for law school.

Mike, absolutely so very proud of her. She's heading out on her first West Coast summer tour this year, we all wish her well. Star was 14 as well when a few friends started a female punk band in town, I think they were called the Scallihags or something. I remember her being asked to sing at all sorts of events in Ellensburg, and all of them saying, "your songs are great, but do you know any Patsi Cline?" Because there's nothing more adorable at the rodeo than a little girl singing "Crazy"!? as I'm sure you can imagine in this burg.... I always kid her doing those Patsi covers as a youth gave her a country drawl that she can't shake.

I have tons of albums and 45's. When I started in the 70's, it was mainstream stuff. Then, I got into NWOBHM and early 80's US metal, and the collection exploded. I have LP's, EP's and 45's, and if they came in a picture sleeve, they're still in it. The really rare ones are safely in plastic sleeves.
I also have some posters, tour books, guitar picks, etc.

Mike, I can tell you without reservation that Alexandria & the Chop Shops Students are light-years ahead of where the Scallihags were at 14. That's a mighty nice Les Paul your daughter is playing, great choice. Stars' first guitar was a Sears Vibratone, a bad Fender knock-off. I remember she took a knife to the speaker of a cheapo Peavey amp so she could get the guitar sound to distort. When schools out high school bands with big dreams start rocking, my advice to you is: invest in some quality earplugs and let her rip. Look out this summer as plans of world domination are hatched in your garage :)

Got a big kick out of that Kid Cudi's adaptation of She Came Along. You probably knew I'd love the Sergio Leone inspired Man with No Name parody.
