little help w/ 32 caramel ruth....

backdrop first.

bought this card 3 - 4 years back when getting back into the hobby. anywho, ran across this ruth that had absolutely tremendous eye appeal. was one of the cards that I loved as a kid. paid $2K I think. didn't know much about graded cards at the time, but was told that it came back "a" because of a slight pinhole/maybe slight doctoring on the back" (see arrow).

1st question: does it looked trimmed to you experts out there, as well?

flash forward a few years years. vcp has "a" ruths listed at $371. I have the chance and ability to upgrade a few grades ahead, so I am possibly thinking about letting her go, which brings me to my 2nd question:

2nd question: what do you think she's worth?

i've looked at other "a's" out there and none really hold a candle to this one, imo. i am mainly into 50's, 60's & 70's cards and not much pre-war so figured i'd bring her over here to this forum to see what the pro's think.

you guys seem to know your sh!t, so...

if this is frowned upon, I'm sorry. just lemme know and i'll yank the thread....

as stated, I'm just lost on this one and not even sure I even wanna sell her til I have the other locked up, even then I still might have a hard time letting her go.

"you always remember your first!"

3rd question: was i a fool dropping $2K on her?

i have thick skin, so feel free to bash if so.

It looks a tad short and neat but hard to say.

begsu1013 03-16-2015 08:52 PM

probably so. after seeing your's the bottom border seems a lil off

Leon 03-18-2015 08:46 AM

Not a bad looking card but I would probably opt for a nice 1-2 grade for that price. I think they can be had for about that...

pencil1974 03-18-2015 08:51 AM

I actually picked up a 3 for $2000 not to long ago.

begsu1013 03-18-2015 09:57 AM

yes, I was rook and a lil naïve on grading, but it does have a tremendous eye appeal.

currently looking at a 7, so we will see what happens.

pencil1974 03-18-2015 11:48 AM

Good luck we all know grading is a crap shoot at times. Never know though unless you try and it's worth it on this since the worst case it goes back into an "A" holder.

GasHouseGang 03-18-2015 12:19 PM

Well, since you asked

1st question: does it looked trimmed to you experts out there, as well?

Yes. It also appears to have a tack hole that was filled (where your arrow points), based on the scans. Someone apparently filled the hole and trimmed it across the top and bottom.

2nd question: what do you think she's worth?

Some people would never buy it because it won't grade. The last two PSA graded A that sold on ebay went for $371 and $785 according to Vintage Card Prices. So somewhere between these two prices I would suppose.

3rd question: was I a fool dropping $2K on her?

Yes, if you are trying to make money on it. But if you just want to enjoy it, then that's really up to you.

david,

yeah, i have thick skin and appreciate truthful opinions above all else....

however, come to find out from another member* that this card has previously sold for $2049 and $1500, so i feel a little better about what i paid!

although it might be trimmed, the overall eye appeal is better than most of the 5's ive seen even with the minute tack hole.

*shout out to james on the previous pricing history!

Peter_Spaeth 03-18-2015 03:43 PM

The eye appeal of trimmed cards is usually pretty good.

begsu1013 03-18-2015 04:01 PM

could trim up that 4 above and I'd still pick mine.

If both cards were trimmed so would I. What's your point?

Are you saying you'd rather have a trimmed but pretty one than a VG-EX unaltered one? Well that would put you in a small minority I would guess, judging by market values. But what the hell, to each his own, if you like sharp corners though you best be real careful of card doctors whether your cards are slabbed or not.

begsu1013 03-18-2015 04:35 PM

my point was pretty clear. i was objecting to your statement that all trimmed cards look pretty good...or to put it in laymen's terms or more precisely: you cant polish a turd.

Who said ALL trimmed cards? Read what I wrote, I said the eye appeal of trimmed cards is USUALLY pretty good. And I stand by that, usually cards are trimmed with the intention of selling to folks who are hung up on condition/numerical grade/what have you.

begsu1013 03-18-2015 04:46 PM

you seem like you like to argue a lot, peter.

You insult my card, I correct your misquotation of my post, and I'm the argumentative one. If you say so.

begsu1013 03-18-2015 04:48 PM

yep.

edited to add: not just talking about this post.

Just curious if you have ever seen this at the top of every page on the forum?

Ok but rules are rules. It's very difficult to bend too much. But no worries if you are fine with it on this one. This little reminder has given me the impetus to make that statement bold, on each page. So something good came out of it. Carry on....And of course this isn't "personal" to Bob, it's just one of the most, if not the most, important rules on our forum (to me).

Love your mashed potatoes-- my daughter is a fan of your mac and cheese, but personally I think it could be thicker/cheesier.

If $2000 is the worst you've ever been beaten on a card, you're a genius in this hobby, not a fool. All that being said, that card is trimmed for sure.

cal,

luckily it is and don't necessarily feel beaten even though she's apparently trimmed. now, i've had more than enough fake slabs or scams attempted. could probably write a very long synopsis on that front. luckily I learned at a very young age about the importance of due diligence!

I was going to tell him it wouldn't make my top 5 3 mistakes. :(

at $2000, it might make my top 3, not 5....but 4 digits, not my top 5 :)

begsu1013 03-18-2015 08:43 PM

ironically enough some due diligence paid off again, leon.

was looking at a 75 vida blue from pristine paper. googled name and your locked thread popped up. crazy stuff there!
