w575-1 handcut with jagged edges
 

I don't remember seeing very many, if any, W575-1's that have this kind of "tear" on their top and bottom borders. Have ya'll? (nice card by the way)

Yes, they're out there. Rhett probably has some and I've seen a few I believe posted here. Same with w501, as one printing of w575-1 was on thinner or at least slightly different stock.

I posted the same question about those several years ago when I saw dozens of graded examples at a single dealer table. I'm still not sure how they got that way.

These are what I had in the past called W575-1B , more recently however I have taken to calling them W501 Type 2's (as I believe that to be a more accurate description of what these are). They are on the exact same stock as W501 cards (thin and cheap), they have the same "grainy" photo quality as W501's, and they share the same checklist as well, the only difference being that they are missing the card number and "G-4-22" line at top. Also just like W501 cards they came in vertical strips and can be found with the "tear" lines at top and bottom or simply hand cut a the top and bottom but the sides have always ben machine cut. They are definitely tougher than the regular W501 cards but it is hard to know by how many times.

You can find the regular W501 cards on occasion with the same "tear separation" at top and bottom as well...

It is my opinion that the "torn" look is due to how the cards were likely distributed. The possibly came in a large roll and pulled out like tape from a dispenser and the person simply tore them against a slightly sharp edge which resulted in the "torn" look... similar to how we get tape out of a tape dispenser.

Here's one posted by a board member some time back. Note the descended "u" in Pittsburgh-- I don't recall seeing that on the other sets.

Rhett...I tend to agree. There are two distinct styles of W-501...with and without numbers...I cannot determine the paper finish inside the slab, but 501's, while similar to 575's, tend to have a slightly more screened finish

I have a W575-1 Elmer Miller that appears the same way. Looks different than my other W575-1 of him and the printing is grainier than the others
