Sports Collector's Digest Graded Cards
What's the story behind Sports Collector's Digest (SCD) graded cards? Good? Bad? Ugly? Are they still in the grading business?
|
Sports Collector's Digest
Not to be confused with Sportscard Guarantee Corp. (SGC).
I read once (I cannot remember where) that these cards were actually pretty good, but didn't last long. Then some other company made card holders that looked almost identical (except for some small name change), but they were definitely NOT good. |
SCD had a short-lived grading service with slabs in the red logo of the publication. They pulled out of the business and sold it off shortly thereafter to someone who used a blue logo flip. Quality fell off quickly and the whole endeavor went down the toilet. This was what their slab looked like [not mine]:

What Adam said.
I will buy a red slab and ignore a blue slab. I cracked open a 1969 Mantle from a red flip and subbed it to SGC. Received same grade. |
Yeah, those red-slabbed cards are what I've been seeing more of lately. Never really paid much attention to them, but then realized the company's been in business for awhile so they must be doing something right.

IIRC, they had some interesting ideas such as the "untouched" grades and I thought they even had an 11 grade. (I think that's hyperbole)
They used the Fritsch's to advertise their services and should have been able to survive on just grading Larry and Jeff's cards Rich |
