Negro League Panoramic - Help Please
2 Attachment(s)
Can anyone help me identify this "poster"? It is approx 36 x10 framed. There are 3 folds. The "Cool Papa" Bell signatures are not the same.
Players names are: Marshell McNair Joseph Morris Johnson Allen Rogan Mendez Moore Hawkins W. Bell C. Bell Mothell Duncan Drake Sweatt Bartlett |
I bet Ryan Christoff would be able to help. His knowledge of Negro League memorabilia and subject matter is pretty incredible.

According to my uniform research that is the 1924 Kansas City Monarchs. Could be a year plus or minus but that's the jersey style I usually see on 1924 dated photos. Player ID's narrow it down pretty good, too. Dobie Moore was with the team from 1920 to early 1926 when he was shot and fell from a window of a brothel. Not kidding. Cliff Bell joined the team in 1921. William Bell joined in 1923. But Jack Marshall makes it much easier - he only played with the Monarchs in 1924. Hop Bartlett also was a 1924-only Monarch, and only part of the '24 season for what it's worth.

I have a panoramic reprint of the same photo and it is labeled 1924 KC Monarchs
|
And I'm not quite sure why Cool Papa Bell signed this photo - he was playing for the St. Louis Stars at the time. He wasn't with KC until the early 1930's.

Twice?... Assuming they're authentic

Auto's look good to me...

Are the two sig's are over the two players marked "Bell"? I think whom ever owned this earlier did not know that the 2 "Bell" players weren't Cool Papa Bell but Cliff and William Bell. He then had Bell sign it, which in turn maybe led to Cool's confusion over where he was in the shot and before you know it there's two Cool Papa's signatures on the thing.

W and C are the 2nd and 3rd players just to the right of the center fold.

Thanks to everyone for quickly identifying the year of the photo.
Any ideas about the origin? I was thinking it could be a folded insert from a book. |
