All I can find is that they've been using some variation of the hanging socks since 1960, so this must predate that. I know Chicago used a winged sock logo in the 1950's, but I've never seen a Boston winged sock.

Looks like it might be from the series of MLB patches issued by Quaker Oats. Someone else will know for sure, but that's my guess.
