I stole this from another website. Pretty cool article from 1895.

And then one day he held an auction, and got some of his friends to place phony bids...

Piratedogcardshows 01-22-2015 07:17 PM

That is awesome. I picture him peddling N172's and Mayo's. Great article.

Here's a few postcards, though after 1895
2 are blank, and the others are postmarked 1911 & 1913
Maybe young Willie was the inspiration of the postcard series

Great post, great article and cool post cards. 25 cents/hundred... could you imagine if all of those were only baseball players... there'd have to be a couple of Brownings in that pile...

Jobu 01-22-2015 09:30 PM

Fun article, thanks for sharing that.

Neat article, one I hadn't seen before.

I've posted this link before but feel it is fitting for this thread. It is an excerpt from Dave Jamieson's Mint Condition regarding collecting Old Judge and other 19th century cards. Interesting from start to finish.

I know I'll be looking for Willie Dreyfus stamps on the backs of OJs. Would be really cool to find one.
