(14) 1927 St. Louis Cardinals "Worlds Champions" White Jersey Original Player Photos
3 Attachment(s)
These are fresh from an estate. I believe that these photos are important to the history of jersey styles as the all white 1927 "World(s) Champions" jerseys are not known to exist. The pinstriped " World Champions" jerseys are the style that is known to exist. If you look at the sleeve patch on the 12 " Worlds Champions" player photos, the patch is even different from the 2 " World Champions" jerseys. The red bird logo even seems a little different in design.
Any thoughts or knowledge of another 1927 cardinals alternate jersey design? Thanks in advance. |
Those are AWESOME! Are they yours?
|
Yes. Purchased those along with a bunch of other sports stuff at an estate sale.
I think they look awesome together. |
Nice pickup! Can you identify all the players? Do you mind saying how much they set you back?
|
Really cool pickup! Congrats!
|
I can't provide any info, but those are really cool photos!!!! Congrats on the pick up!

cards jersey
gorgeous photos!
congrats! all the best, barry |
Most of the hats don't match Cardinal hats. One is wearing and O on his hat. Could be 1928 Spring training.
|
There are several different uniform styles represented if you look. The "S" on the sleeves are different. Some have interlocking S & L, others an St.
Purely a guess, but I don't think these are the St. Louis Cardinals. I would guess some type of minor league team or maybe even an All Star team of some kind. |
I was trying to photo match some of these to major players on the roster and could not. Chick Hafey, Bottomley, Hornsby, Pete Alexander....I could not spot any of them. Granted, my eyesight isn't what it used to be :)
|
The player with an "O" on his hat and the player directly below him are wearing the Official pinstriped 1927 World Champions jersey. I have photo matched them to other photos of the 1927 jerseys. The sleeve on those jerseys have an "s" and "t" on the sleeve. The other 12 jerseys that are not pinstripes have the "s" at the end of "world" and the sleeve is an "SL" intertwined. There is no recollection of the 1927 team wearing this style of jersey, only the pinstriped versions.

I don't know if Marc Okkonen is still around, but perhaps an email to him would be helpful.
Cool photos. |
I have done some research on this a while ago. I have not reached a conclusion, but have some ideas. One resource is that the Cardinals have a museum and the folks there have been helpful on topics like these.
Check out this 1928 Cards jersey. http://www.huntauctions.com/live/ima...=381&lot_qual= Note that this is the only non-Rawlings jersey you will see worn by the Cards. There have been several of this type that surfaced and the prevailing view is that this is a game worn jersey (although photo matches have not yet been found). How does this impact your photo? What I wonder is whether the Cards ordered Rawlings and Saenz jerseys that year and decided to stick with Rawlings and did use the others. Again, I have no direct proof, just a thesis. dan |
Years back I found a small stash of snapshots that featured some kids wearing exactly these same jerseys
I no longer own these photos <a href="http://s22.photobucket.com/user/nudan92/media/xItems%20that%20have%20been%20sold-2/1927d.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b331/nudan92/xItems%20that%20have%20been%20sold-2/1927d.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo 1927d.jpg"/></a> <a href="http://s22.photobucket.com/user/nudan92/media/xItems%20that%20have%20been%20sold-2/1927a.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b331/nudan92/xItems%20that%20have%20been%20sold-2/1927a.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo 1927a.jpg"/></a> |
Also, one says "World" and the other says "Worlds" as well.
cool reference Dan. |

The photo on the right, that jersey is wearing him! |
The players pictured are from the 1928 Waynesboro (PA) Red Birds. They were in the Blue Ridge League. The league was classified as a "D" league. Only 3 of the players appeared in a major league game.
Rippy-Pitcher Ludke- Pitcher Larsh- Pitcher Miller- Manager Tieman-1B Elzer-Pitcher Connolly- SS Traynor-3B Burkie-C O'toole- OF Hollingsworth-Pitcher- played in MLB Hunter- Pitcher/OF- MLB (1) game Myers-OF- Played in MLB Gibson- Pitcher I'm still doing research on the jerseys themselves and the 2 different styles and also the reason why a minor league team would be wearing the Major League Cardinals " Worlds Champions" jerseys. Thanks for everyone's help so far! |
Love them uniforms!

Didn't the Major League teams often give their old uniforms to some of the Minor League teams when they were done with them or, as may be the case here, they did not end up using that version?
|
FWIW the photos of a 20 year old Al Hollingsworth and a 17 year old Billy Myers are their very first seasons in professional baseball. Thought that was pretty cool considering they had decent MLB careers.
Still researching the uniforms! |

Looking to get all these framed together...
The mystery still remains of the "World's" vs "World" Champions jerseys after 4 years! |
