derrick07 01-13-2015 09:01 AM

specific....

Anyone, more specifically I guess, can anyone give an opinion if they think these signatures are from Joe Dimaggio or fraud. Thank you

RichardSimon 01-13-2015 10:06 AM

The one on ebay has a COA from our good friends at B&J Collectibles.
Their COA means don't walk away, just run away.

derrick07 01-13-2015 10:27 AM

Richard,
Thank you. Any thoughts with the one on the plaque? I'm sure there are too many threads to count on COA topics but are any 90% reliable when it comes to guys such as Joe Dimaggio and Mantle?
Appreciate it
Derrick

btcarfagno 01-13-2015 10:54 AM

Wow. The fact that the ball on Ebay looks like it was signed by a four year old should give you an indication that it is best to stay away. The "COA" is the proverbial icing on the cake (or it could be that the "COA" was done by a four year old and the autograph is the proverbial icing on the cake....either way works really).

Tom,
Thank you.

Wow. Was it a late in life example? It looks terrible. I know he had some sort of deal with B&J that fell through and he sued them...was that just before he passed away or something?

He had a deal and signed thousands of baseballs for them. They took there forged ones and mixed them up. Then they made a deal with GAI and had them all authenticated. Thiis happens to be an authentic one. You had a 30 percent chance of getting a good one.

I believe there was a story in the DiMaggio biography how he signed for B&J and there were cases of signed balls in the B&J warehouse. A day or two after DiMaggio had left, the amount of signed items had mysteriously doubled in the warehouse.

I believe the lawsuit was over signed bats, if I recall correctly.

It's been years since I read it, but the memorabilia fiasco was covered in great detail in Joe DiMaggio: The Hero's Life.

My takeaway was Joe was not someone you wanted to have business dealings with. Of course, I have no sympathy for B&J Collectibles.

David Atkatz 01-13-2015 03:19 PM

Joe was not one you would want to have any dealings with. He was a prick.

shelly 01-13-2015 03:24 PM

Zip, Dimaggio sued them for backing out of the remainder of the contract. Yes they not only doubled but tripled the amount of signed balls. They where very smart. Hire the guy and then sell the rest of there garbage as authentic. He did that with Berra, Koufax and at least a dozen other players.

derrick07 01-13-2015 03:49 PM

Thank you Shelly and Tom. Lots to digest and more analyzing needs to be done on my behalf. Thank you everyone for the assistance.
Recap, Ball is good but pic is not.

shelly 01-13-2015 03:58 PM

Ball is good and the Picture:mad::mad::mad: That should help you.
If anyone thinks the Dimaggio ball is good please chime in I think Tom is wrong on this one.

I was at least ten signings with him. You could not ask for a better signature. That is all you can say nice about him.:(

I will absolutely defer to you here Shelly. I still say it is quite fugly and would rather go after a nicer example if I was the OP.

Sorry, but that Joe D. on a baseball is a forgery.

shelly 01-13-2015 07:42 PM

Chris I say black and you say white. Please tell me why it is a forgery. I totally disagree. Zip forgetting the b and j certs what is your thoughts on the joe d ball. Where are the rest of the Joe d experts.

It's a typical B&J Collectibles.

B&J definitely had some authentic DiMaggio sigs, but that's not one of them.

If someone from here wins it and submits it to PSA or JSA, I guarantee they will not authenticate it.

It's slowly penned, the baseline is way off, etc.

It's the same forgery sold by the Bergen County Prosecutor.

Which baseball are you betting on to be authentic, Shelly?

shelly 01-13-2015 08:17 PM

You know what I find amazing is that no other person has come on and said good or bad except three people. Where are you JoeD and the rest of you.

The truth is, Shelly, DiMaggio is one of the most difficult sigs to "authenticate."

The majority of people who look at a "Joe DiMaggio" autograph really don't know what they are looking at.

There are many people who make fun of "me and my trained eye," but it works for me, and it comes from looking at a ton of autographs every week.

shelly 01-13-2015 08:24 PM

I went to his web site and he is selling a lot of bad stuff. I will still take the gamble.
Can you send me a picture so I can list it and get the quick opinion. I hate to be wrong on this but it happens.:D Gee Chris that is what you said about me. Tom if I am wrong you have my apologies.
Chris, I must be getting very old. Your eye is better than my eye.:)
Just send me the picture so I can list it.

I emailed you the photo of it, Shelly.

Did not get it.

Mr. Zipper 01-13-2015 08:34 PM

This is the one in question, correct?

http://www.ebay.com/itm/221657522782

Note the slow, heavy connection between the gg and the slow, deliberate "io"

It's not quite as slow and wobbly as the fake B&J ball Chris posted, but in my opinion it is from the same hand.

Sorry, Shelly! :)

shelly 01-13-2015 08:36 PM

Wow, two people I trust. I am wrong. Sorry.:o
I saw so many B and J Dimaggio's this does not look like one of them. I saw more than one thousand bad Joe D balls from him. Chris I will send 12 dollars to your favorite Charity. Zip thanks, I will be a little more careful next time.

Exactly, Steve.

As there are variations in Joe D's sig (for every signer), those that pen forgeries, also have variations of the forgeries they pen.

derrick07 01-13-2015 09:40 PM

Thank you Shelly and Chris,
Very educational on the subject. Chris you said Mr Dimaggio is one of the most difficult to authenticate, is it due to the skill of the frauds or Dimaggios wasn't always that consistent on his signature?
Shelly if you are wrong, your insight warranted such excellent feedback that is exceptionally greater than just yes or no.
Thank you

Thank you

Signatures change all of the time.

I probably own (I wrote "probably") every variation of Joe D's sig, and it's a matter of "training your eye" for characteristics.

Once you can do that, you can "look" at autographs that you aren't that familiar with and opine on them.

When it comes to explaining the "technicalities" of an autograph, I can't do it.

Remember that signed Joe D. bat that was posted on here? Everyone but Mr. Zipper and myself thought it was a forgery. I knew immediately it was authentic.

When you master your "eye," you can get some great deals without alerting the autograph community and asking them to opine on it.

I once picked up a Joe D. signed golf program for $28.00.

I've picked up a few snow-white Mickey Mantle autographed baseballs for between $160.00 and $220.00.

Once you get to a level of "training your eye," the deals are out there.

I learn something new about autographs every day. Yes, every day.

derrick07 01-14-2015 09:37 AM

Thank you everyone. Great community. Lots of expertise on this thread.
Thank you Chris for the detail

No need to be sorry, Shelly.

If you want, can you please send the $12.00 to St. Judes Children's Hospital.

Just curious if anyone knows, are the 1993 Pinnacle signed DiMaggio cards (the ones that came in the tins with the set) authentic? They seem all over the board considering they were probably all signed around the same time.

Authentic Joe DiMaggio.

derrick07 01-19-2015 10:43 AM

Thank you kind sir.

btcarfagno 01-19-2015 11:15 AM

If I was in the market for a later in life DiMaggio signed ball, I would go after one of the ones he signed with the "Yankee Clipper" inscription on the sweet spot with his signature. I have always liked the look of those and they are available for around $300-350 or so. A little more than a plain single, but for me I would go the extra little bit to get ones with that inscription. I just like them.

derrick07 01-19-2015 09:35 PM

Thank you Tom. That's a great suggestion. I've seen a few but again I've only been looking on ebay for now, for its convenience. I hope to make out to some card shows in the summer.

shelly 01-20-2015 10:13 AM

If your thinking of buying it at a card show your wrong. That is the only time Ebay is cheaper.
