What is your favorite heated discussion?

a few examples: T206 sheet-size, reason for the scarcity of T206 Plank cards, Coupon cards categorization, what constitutes a rookie card?, should photographs get their own Net54 sub-forum... I am sure there are many more, but this should suffice for stirring up trouble…I mean, discussion.

Brian Van Horn 01-12-2015 01:02 PM

I'm generally lukewarm.

ullmandds 01-12-2015 01:02 PM

my favorite heated discussion is proper use of:

their, they're and there

and

two, too, to.

Mountaineer1999 01-12-2015 01:04 PM

Pete Rose H.O.F

Runscott 01-12-2015 01:07 PM

That's really good - I forgot about HOF arguments.

Another good one is ebay shilling discussions, which is actually my least favorite. Personally, I like the T206 sheet-size threads.

Complaining about lack of punctuation in long sentences, or lack of periods, period. Surest way to get someone screaming in misspelled curse words.

I like the discussion about where to have dinner.

As long as it's a hot dinner, I guess it qualifies as a "heated" discussion.

My favorite (as in 'not my favorite') was a girlfriend who refused to recommend where to eat dinner, but never liked my choice.

and should we call T206 upside down backs "uppy's" or "USDB'S" for short??;):)

Patrick, the idea for this thread came when I accidentally discovered an archived 2003 thread about rookie cards. It involved so much personal preference and opinion, making it no-win, yet people still got their backs up. I do it too, so not claiming superiority…although if you want to claim I'm superior, I'm good with that.

The fact that you are thinking about that is disturbing.

Johnny - your rebuttal to scrap questions is admittedly stale, but it's also very predictable. If you can ever come up with a logical response to our posts about printer scrap, please feel free to do so - it would be refreshing.

Eric72 01-12-2015 03:16 PM

What is your favorite heated discussion?

My favorite heated discussion is a thread in which a scammer tries to legitimize their shenanigans and is ultimately quashed by the board.

The, "Nun's Wagner" stunt comes to mind, for example.

Well Johnny, I hope you continue to enjoy these scraps vicariously through the collections of others, and that every now and then one of your friends tosses a sympathy scrap your way :)

As far as "hate on something good" - I don't hate them;in fact I love them. If you remember, I wrote an article about them. I will gladly buy additional scraps if I think they are enough below the current market value that I can re-sell them at a profit. I sold my previous ones for a reason - I just wasn't in love with them enough to keep them, and I got serious bucks for every last one of them, which I used to buy other things. You are a smart guy - you understand this. Quit playing dumb :) I find it ironic that you personally had such a huge part in destroying your own ability to collect something you love. You talked so much about them that you convinced your friends who had cash, and now you're kind of out of the game.

For your sake, given how much you wish you could afford to buy some, I wish the market price had stayed low. I'm sure you miss those days. Me - I sold all of mine, so obviously I wasn't quite so in love with them as you. That makes them a commodity in my mind, and that's still how I look at them.

In 1983 I could have bought a T206 Wagner for well under $50,000. I didn't. I regret it. Scraps - not so much.

Good luck, Johnny. I hope you get over being scrap poor and assuming everyone else feels the same way.

mrvster 01-12-2015 03:57 PM

like i said....

bitter sweet like I said....:)

Johnny, bewildered over ten years of these retorts of yours, I sent you an email. But just read this post and it sounds like you just have a weird sense of humor. In the future I'll take your responses with a grain of salt.

Runscott 01-12-2015 04:04 PM

...and as far as scrap envy goes, ask Chris what my thoughts were when the huge T206 collection with scraps and rare backs became available during the National.

I would have bought them in a heartbeat if I had found a partner, I would have studied the scraps until I fell asleep with them in my lap, learning as much as I possibly could have from them - maybe even written another article.

Then I would have sold every last one of them.

mrvster 01-12-2015 04:06 PM

you should have gotten it....

that's like a treasure trove:eek:

Fred - you have abused this thread...even worse than me and Johnny. I will never again be able to watch Gilligan's Island with the same level of ... fantasy?

Fred and Scott,
I was laughing when I was responding knowing the funny stuff that would be posted.

Can confirm, there was a shock and awe look then immediately the number crunching look then the "Im disappointed in you son" look. :(

Runscott 01-12-2015 04:32 PM

Tim, I have to thank you as well. When I started this thread I was feeling a little mischievous, but you injected some humor, which is better. Still feeling mischievous, here are a few more...

"Let's discuss the merits of the Type system for classifying photos"
"Are the TPAs really trying to authenticate autographs, or just trying to grab a buck whenever possible?" ;)
"Who knows more about T206's, Txx or Tyy?" (you didn't think I would actually type names did you?) :D
"Is it okay to cut up old baseball guides?"
"Is it okay to read Hauls of Shame?" :p
"Is it okay to bid with AH's that have ever done anything wrong?"
"Is Grandpa Simpson really the Lindbergh baby?":eek::)

Man what the heck is going on around here lately. First Pete starts a T206
thread and now Johnny gets in a heated discussion. I don't even know what kind of odds I would have put on either one of these ever happening let alone to have them both take place in the same week. ( By the way I would
have put 2 to 1 on Pete over Johnny).

I finally determined that Johnny is just joking around. It was tough to decipher, but he basically verified my thinking.

Pete starting a T206 thread? It could be that his i.d. was hacked.

Just Googled it.... Ginger is 80 (will be 81 within a month) and MaryAnn is 76.
