Any Guesses on T206 rare back populations and rarities???
Hello All!
I have discussed this quite frequently with board members.... any thoughts?? populations?? example: broadleaf 460- 75- 100??? drum- 300?? uzit- 500?? brown om- 13?? upside down 75-100?? brown lenox- 25?? cobb back- 13?? broadleaf 350- 500?? blank backs- 400?? wagners- 75?? planks- 200?? doyles- 14?? magies- 400?? ect....ect.... lets here some educated guesses....:) these are just some quick guesses off the top of my head ....... feel free to play around, should be a fun thread:D |
Your estimate of Planks seems high.
If production of Plank was stopped at the same time as wagner, then mistakenly restarted with the 350 series before being stopped again, there would have to be a significantly larger number of 350 series Planks for your estimate to hold true. I like the question, though. And I think that our obsession with the minutia of this set is why other collectors hate T206. :D |
This is why I concentrate on the card fronts as the priority.
As long as the back are clean, it's still a nice over-100-year-old card. |
Johnny, I take it back.
I checked T206resource.com. Here are the results: Plank with unlisted back - 11 Plank - 150 series - 16 Plank - 350 series - 31 If these results are indicative, nearly twice as many Planks were produced during the 350 series run, so there should be approximately three Planks for every Wagner. |
How about ghost backs?

Sub-category:
Upside down back 50-75 (only 4 SLers known) PS- Would love to hear Brian W and Scot R jump in here with their estimates of rare backs. |
Mike....
you are right......
4 southern leaguers........but what's so special about them, is they are scrap! off the same sheet with the same cut! you own hart, I own thebo......:)sister cards from the sheet....sick stuff!!! very similar to brown old mill in a way, except ink wasn't changed, the sheets were inverted......really cool shxx:cool: btw.....in the upside down back thread, it breaks down the count between factory cut upside down backs, and printers scrap upside down backs.....great stuff!!! I have a feeling this is going to be a great thread....hope our back experts chime in.....Jim R and the like:) |

Wagners --- 75+/-
Doyles --- 7 |
I am a bit shocked that some of the estimates are so low. In 1976 or 1977 I attended my first major card convention in Detroit. I had one T206 in my collection (Doc White Sovereign portrait) and about $200 spending money. One of my major purchases was a stack of 100 T206s for 25 cents apiece. Most lower grade but some better. HOFers included. Also a wide mix of backs. Believe it or not there were 3 UZITs, a DRUM, and I think the brown Hindu Wilbur Goode I traded to a board member last year. Being ignorant and backs having apparently no premium at all I never realized that I got an amazing deal. Still have the Drum and one Uzit. Kind of staggering to think that I at one time owned 4 of the rarest couple of thousand T206s and that I got em for a buck! And the dealer (who I believe was one of the biggest in the hobby) thought they were junk!!
